It is a word unthinkable at the time of my primary vote (8 January.) Mere mention of the word would produce an immediate rebuttal of nonsense - including by me - because it seemed incomprehensible that a nation so devoted to capitalist ways, with a pro-business government... would ever go near such a topic.
Well, here we are, madness has set in. Our government plans to partially nationalise some of our biggest banks in order to forestall financial collapse. I like the idea of an equity stake in these firms, given the enormity of the bill we are asked to pay.
I'm wondering though about the sheer scope of the word, how it is contrary to so much about our outlook. What are your thoughts about this stunning, incredible, surreal change in our economic system?
Discuss... nationalisation of our banks on whatever level you wish.

lmao!
Having once worked for an insurer, I am pretty certain some lower in the food chain types thought this a good idea to party up. My recollection is there are some heavy duty drinkers in that industry.

Take a look at the majority of votes in the House and Senate for the bailout:
Democrats in both so how do you blame it on the Republicans?
How do you get to 'the Democrats did this,' when the Democrats have held Congress for precisely 20 months, and prior to, for 12 years the House was Republican, and the Senate largely so, while for the last 7 years and change, the presidency has been held by a Republican?
By all accounts, that is a bit of a reach, especially given the loose housing finance methodology ended before Democrats took possession of Congress - the mortgage issue has been out there that long, and it has snowballed.
