BO fining parents

I was watching some of the debate from last week online because i missed it. McCain brought up that Obama wants to fine parents who do not have health insurance on their children.

I'm not sure how most people feel about this, but isn't health insurance just as important as shelter, education and food. I definitely think that not insuring your children should fall into the neglect category. People can complain about the cost of health care but if you can't afford having a child, don't have one.

I guess i was wondering what others thought about this.

No, I don't believe in not educating children (that would be dumb of me as I am a teacher).

BO and his followers are not content with government mandating things. They wish to control how people go about meeting that mandate. If the mandate is medical care be provided for children, forcing the purchase of insurance is now dictating to the populace how they will meet a government-imposed mandate.

That brings up an intersting point ... how will our ever-caring government determine who has insured their kids and who hasn't?

"You didn't say a negligent parent but that any parent should be fined that didn't have health care for their children. Again, anyone who has no insurance but still takes their kids to the doc & pays for it, that's their business if they want to handle it that way & no one in government should tell them they have to have insurance or face paying a fine. NOT the government's business."

I don't think you quite get what i'm saying. I'm not using the parent who takes their kid to the doctor and pays out of pocket as an example. I'm using the child who develops leukemia as an example. How is a parent going to pay out of pocket for hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars? I'm saying that the govt requiring this child to be covered helps to protect the tax payer from medical bankruptcy. Tax payers should not have to pay off the balance for an irresponsible parent.

"Aah...but how can you know what the circumstances will be for every situation for the rest of your life? Suppose a parent loses their job? Suppose you get a new job and your employer doesn't provide insurance? Suppose insurance was previously affordable, but simply becomes too expensive? At what point do we all get to live in your 20/20 hindsight world?"

I never said it was a black and white issue. I understand things come up. But if you can't take care of your children, you shouldn't have had them.

"I guess in your world, for parents in a difficult situation, "good parenting" is choosing health insurance over food and clothing."

Can't feed them, Don't breed them.

and i feel for parents like that. I think that health insurance should be a govt run and not private companies. I don't think anyone should be treated a certain way for their health unless it is their own fault. Everyone deserves cheap and good health insurance. If you're a smoker, i don't care what you get charged. If you weigh 700 lbs, i don't care how much you get charged. But charging someone for an illness that no one is at fault with is disgusting. Life should be more important than a health insurance company making money.

You want cheap insurance? You can obtain it now, however you will get what you pay for.

I've not read the whole thread, but in case it hasn't been mentioned, Obama's plan gives lower income people government money to help them pay for health insurance.
