BO fining parents

I was watching some of the debate from last week online because i missed it. McCain brought up that Obama wants to fine parents who do not have health insurance on their children.

I'm not sure how most people feel about this, but isn't health insurance just as important as shelter, education and food. I definitely think that not insuring your children should fall into the neglect category. People can complain about the cost of health care but if you can't afford having a child, don't have one.

I guess i was wondering what others thought about this.

not saying the military is perfect, but I have to be honest, after 16 years here, I'm glad i at least had coverage. i've had a nose job done, a tumor the size of a softball, my children, all with the military, and although it is not perfect, it is coverage, and if i need immediate care and they can't accommodate me, we go to a nearby walk in clinic that is completely covered. my daughters NICU stay probably cost close to $500,000 and i never paid a dime of it. Her neurology appts that followed, probably cost $500 a pop, never paid a dime. These were all with private out of military docs, and heck even in the case of her neurologist, it was an out of network doctor that Tricare approved because she was the only qualified doctor for an infant in the entire state, so albeit not perfect, but it's something, we are all healthy in this house.

I think fining parents is an excellent idea.

I've had some poor doctors and some great doctors in my time in. I remember the poor doc when i smashed my toe, went to the mtf at the time they were trying a new program and outsourcing. I couldn't get into the out source, so i went to the naval hospital. after all the waiting, i see a doc for him to tell me after i get an x-ray , we can't treat you but you broke your toe really bad. HUH?! shortly after they realized outsourcing didn't work well. most of us military were more po'd at the outsourcing treatment than we were in the mtf. i had a lady outside tell me i was diabetic when i had a blood sugar reading of 120 after drinking a coke, and eating a burger and fries. *LOL* this was outside of the mtf during the privatized time. my daughter has some good allergies, food wise, we got referred to a private allergist. the coverage that most people complain of is the immediate care, because sometimes immediate care no matter where you go isn't the best. I've btdt with my son, who smashed his head falling off a couch and i had to go to the walk in clinic. the docs did nothing. he started throwing up the next day, turns out he had an ear infection on top of it that caused the ear infection but if the out on town docs did their job and did an exam on my son they may have seen it 8 hours earlier, saving me another trip, instead they said oh he bumped his head, look out for this without every looking at his eyes or anything. grr...crappy docs are everywhere, ok maybe they aren't crappy just overworked. maybe the problem isn't with our healthcare system, it is with peoples expectations? I mean so many complain about the MTF but really, it is not as bad as what everyone says...first hand if you want to know my history, my daughter had a stroke upon birth, we have had great docs both in and out of the MTF help us, i had what they thought was a cancerous tumor and they flew in army docs to assist in my surgery, turns out wasn't cancerous but took up a good portion of my abdomen, all done by military docs, a deviated septum with a full nose job, done by a military doctor, my c-sections, done by military doctors, and some other things. I've had great docs...maybe those that complain don't hear what they want to hear? i have no idea...but i've had great docs within and bad docs within and that is both in and out of the MTF.

I love that you're looking for solutions! Let me ask you something...

What would be so wrong with a universal health care system, like Canada's?

The current major government run healthcare plan is Medicare. It is going insolvent. Why would I want to entrust all medical care to a Federal government that has been unable to run one program efficiently?

Yes I have private health insurance. I have no desire to have the insurance my state provides for the poor, It is inferior to the private insurance I presently purchase.

Hopefully that'll get fixed when he has the next few nominations to the Supreme Court....
