BO fining parents

I was watching some of the debate from last week online because i missed it. McCain brought up that Obama wants to fine parents who do not have health insurance on their children.

I'm not sure how most people feel about this, but isn't health insurance just as important as shelter, education and food. I definitely think that not insuring your children should fall into the neglect category. People can complain about the cost of health care but if you can't afford having a child, don't have one.

I guess i was wondering what others thought about this.

Most areas do not have sufficient public transportation to get around in a reasonable amount of time/energy on a daily basis. A few do - New York, DC, San Francisco....but so many just plain DON'T. And the development model pushed most enthusiastically by the right for at least three decades now has been the suburban/exurban model which is based around low-density, few-story, widespread "communities" which oftentimes don't even have sidewalks in many parts of them.

So it is that most people - even the poorest - often try to find a way to squeeze a car, even an old beater, into their budget somehow, because they must have one just to get through daily life, or very nearly so. And your state is not common in allowing people to post bond; many now require insurance (at least liability insurance) outright.

If one doesn't want to pay car insurance, do without a car. The state isn't demanding people purchase cars, then demanding they insure them.

How did you feel about the Terry Schiavo matter?

How do you feel about abortion laws?

Do you feel people should have easy access to contraception, regardless of marital status?

How do you feel about pornography laws?

Insuring a car is different.

You pick where you live. If you decide to live in an area where a car is desirable, that is YOUR choice. There are many urban areas where a car is a hindrance. The decision to own or not own a car is YOURS, always! Mandating insurance for an optional car is not unreasonable.

At the same time, owning a body is not optional. To be a person you require a body. Mandating insurance on something you have no choice over IS unreasonable.

How do you feel about the government mandating that all children go to school (or at least the parents have to prove that they are homeschooling them)?

The poster was concerned about people who don't have insurance because they allegedly can't afford it, not those who choose to go without.

Education of children is required. Not sending them to a public school.

Perhaps you can tell me, why do many private schools educate children for less than half the cost of the public school and do a better job?

Why is education required?

If you really think not educating kids is a good idea, fine. It is what happens quit often in our public school system anyway.
