McCain is closing the gap in the polls. All in all it's been a pretty good day here in America! What do you guys think!

I think people forget that before Monday, some of the largest one day gains in history was smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression. I don't think anyone should be jumping to conclusions and looking at this as the end just yet.

The rise in uncertainty and banking collapse look like the Great Depression

For a broader historical comparison to the credit crunch we can also go back 70 years to the Great Depression. This was the last time that volatility was persistently high (Figure 2). Much like today, the Great Depression began with a stock-market crash and a melt-down of the financial system. Banks withdrew credit lines and the inter bank lending market froze-up. The Federal Reserve Board desperately scrambled to restore calm but without success. What followed were massive levels of stock-market volatility and a recession of unprecedented proportions.

interesting graph showing tremendous gains/losses during the depression (can't seem to paste it in here)

I wasn't saying not to be happy or hopeful....I was however, reminding folks that the stock market went nuts during the Depression (huge lows, followed by huge temporary highs). I do think it's ludicrous to tie the economic gains (or losses) and the price of gas to how well McCain is doing in the polls. There is another thread on the board, linking the lows from last week to Obama's standing in the polls).

ACORN is Obama's favorite group? Look who's speaking at this rally, to community organizations including ACORN:

I agree that to try to tie those things together is another far, far reach with no valid backup.

I've always touted how fear doesn't affect me, but admit that this financial meltdown has made fear raise it's ugly head on my horizon.

Obama should only be proud of the work he has done with community organizations. Unlike McCain, Obama has shown that he will not leave the lower- and middle-classes behind. I, along with a majority of American voters, will welcome him as our next president.
