>>The non-partisan group Disabled American Veterans gives John McCain a 20 percent rating for his voting record on veterans' issues. (It gives Barack Obama an 80 percent rating.)
The non-partisan group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gives McCain a "D" grade for his voting record on issues such as additional funding for combat body armor, and additional funding for post-traumatic stress disorder and other medical treatment. (Obama earned a B +.)<<

I get a chill when I read this. I've read this before. I've seen spokespeople for the DAV being interviewed on TV and heard it coming out of their mouths and still cannot believe that McCain (and his wife) can stand up and call themselves patriots or mavericks or whatever it is that they call themselves this week.

The largest veterans group of current wars - Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America - recently gave out their report card to every member of congress for voting on and supporting the troops. Their methodology was very simple: when legislation was proposed which affected veterans benefits or their situation, how did these senators and representatives vote? If the legislation was for expanded benefits, like research into traumatic brain injury, or the GI Bill that Jim Webb sponsored and authored, then the congresscritters got one point for a yes vote, zero for a no vote - or for skipping the vote (on the theory that if it wasn't important enough to the congresscritter to be there for the vote, then that portion at least of veterans' issues clearly wasn't all that important to the congresscritter in question). Congresscritters got an ADDITIONAL five points for being either the author or one of the initial sponsors of any pro-veteran legislation. The entire methodology is available online, as is the report card itself. But let me just give you a preview: Obama's grade on support for veterans' issues? B. McCain's grade? A literally shocking D.

McCain has - for a long time - counted on his own personal story of heroism and service in the military to substitute for actual legislative support for our men and women in uniform. I think he's been thinking - or hoping - that people would simply assume that a man like John McCain, who was tortured for his country, would AUTOMATICALLY be "in support of the troops." But a glance at his record of votes on veteran-related issues shows this to be far from the reality, sadly. McCain seems endlessly willing to praise the troops, and endlessly willing to COMMIT them to action on a moment's notice to any part of the world....but not to make sure they get what they need and deserve from the country for which so many - including himself - gave so much. I guess when you never need worry about your own health care or finances anymore for as long as you're going to live, other people's problems and situations regarding those things assume a somewhat....shall we say.....less urgent character.

If he had not served in the military, you would never know that John McCain cared about our troops. His votes consistently have been again support for our men and women in the military. Whether it was for the new GI Bill or any other number of issues, McCain has voted against the military.
The fact that McCain’s millionaire spouse would have the same disdain for our men and women in the military is no big surprise.

I think there have been so many distortions on both sides, but more coming from McCains side. While in Williamsburg,VA last week I was at one of the Taverns and a woman was saying her son was soon to leave on his 4th tour in Iraq. This WAR has cost us so much in blood and treasure. The Iraqis have a surplus while we have massive deficits!

It IS informative, isn't it? (not tooting my own horn; I didn't do the work, just found the link)

For example, there are Republicans whom you'd expect to have good grades - guys like Dick Lugar, who've been focused on military and veterans issues for years if not decades. Lugar got an A, Arlen Specter got an A+, both of Maine's moderate-ish Republican Senators got As, and Senators like Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchinson got Bs. But it's especially damning, I think, given the rah-rah, pro-troop boilerplate of the most conservative of Senators and Congresspeople in the GOP, to note that Republicans like DeMint received Fs - Fs!!! Lindsey "Huckleberry" Graham clocks in with a tepid C, McCain's D has already been noted....and it's rounded out by Jeff Sessions, John Kyl, Chuck Grassley, Larry "I Ain't No Homo" Craig and Sam "Brown people are scary" Brownback (all of whom got Cs).

Meanwhile, over on the Democratic, liberal, commie, troop-hating side of the fence, we see people like Barbara Boxer, Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor, Dianne Feinstein, Chris Dodd, Akaka and Inouye from Hawaii, Tom Harkin, Dick Durbin, Evan Bayh, Jeff Bingaman, both Ny's Senators, Clinton and Schumer, Harry Reid, Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, Jim Webb, Pat Leahy, Bernie Sanders, Byrd and Jay Rockefeller, ALL with either As or A+!

Gosh Darn Democratic Commies. Why do they hate the troops so? ;o)

So....Reublicans (in general): eager to send the troops out into harm's way, not so much about funding their healthcare or education or properly equipping them. Democrats? Far more leery of sending the troops off to battle....but willing to show the nation's gratitude and support when they DO.
