Why can't we talk about race?

I've seen this come up here and elsewhere. In the *very strange* thread about Obama's birthplace (or something like that; I couldn't follow the propaganda, quite frankly), two posters said that they wish Michelle Obama had not referenced race. (I don't mean to point those individuals out but merely point out their posts.)

In a country where race is a huge elephant in the room, I don't understand why we shouldn't talk about it. Of course this election is about race. For the first time in our country's history, a black man is running for president on a major political party ticket.

It doesn't have to be a bad thing or a good thing. But race is a factor in this election. It's not necessarily a factor because of McCain or Palin or Obama or Biden -- but because one of the candidates is black. Likewise, gender is an issue, simply because we have a woman on the Republican ticket. Why avoid the topic? Why suggest that the candidates or their spouses not talk about it?

One word:

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.

There's plenty of talk about race out there.

I've always thought every person is different, just as every ethnicity and culture is different.

i DEFINITELY think that people WILL be voting based on race. There are people out there who are "haters" and will not vote for one candidate or another because of race and soley race. Of course I don't have any statistics or anything, but i'm pretty sure that is what will happen. I'm 1/2 mexican and 1/2 white (german and irish) and I WILL be voting for Obama and not due to his race either (just had to get that out of the way!). I think until the end of time, there will be racism. and I think we can't ignore "the elephant in the room" as the OP said. It's sad, but true.

I think its going to play a huge role. In most cases, if both candidates are Caucasian, the Republican will win the traditional conservative, bible-belt states. However, since the bible-belt states often have many African Americans, I think those states will have a big question mark. I think almost all African Americans will vote for Obama, with the exeption of a few.

Two Muslim dads...
One Muslim middle name...

Equals One Muslim Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama.

Psst, if you mention his middle name you’re a racist!

geez louise, you're really having a hard time dealing w/ the fact that he will be our next president and people (like myself, who does NOT have a mental illness) have done their extensive homework and are voting for Barack because WE CAN and we WANT CHANGE. NOT THE SAME CRAP OVER THE PAST 8 YRS!!!!

I think race IS a factor, as it has always been. I on the other hand do not and never have had a problem with race whether in personal or in politics. I feel that there will be expected outcomes should Obama when... like "recount," rather if McCain won there probably wouldnt be. I am white and this is my take.
