Why can't we talk about race?

I've seen this come up here and elsewhere. In the *very strange* thread about Obama's birthplace (or something like that; I couldn't follow the propaganda, quite frankly), two posters said that they wish Michelle Obama had not referenced race. (I don't mean to point those individuals out but merely point out their posts.)

In a country where race is a huge elephant in the room, I don't understand why we shouldn't talk about it. Of course this election is about race. For the first time in our country's history, a black man is running for president on a major political party ticket.

It doesn't have to be a bad thing or a good thing. But race is a factor in this election. It's not necessarily a factor because of McCain or Palin or Obama or Biden -- but because one of the candidates is black. Likewise, gender is an issue, simply because we have a woman on the Republican ticket. Why avoid the topic? Why suggest that the candidates or their spouses not talk about it?

People need to get over it. If someone new can go into office and change this broken country I don't care if he is purple!

I feel race has A LOT to do with the elections....If Obama won, i bet you atleast one person would try to harm him just as they did Martin Luther King Jr. What all of us need to do is pray for him and hope everything will be alright.

I've seen negative, racist T-shirts, heard negative, racist comments...all from white Republicans. Race definitely plays a role in this election and I'm afraid that some people will vote just because of that (ignoring the issues). It's sad, but it's the world we live in.

It always amuses me to see how many Obama's supporters don't seem to mind violations of the law in support of the greater cause of His election.

I guess the ends do justify the means

Personally I think that people will vote based on the candidate's intelligence, ability to handle himself in a variety of situations, his grasp of the issues,ie economy and his attitude. I will vote for Obama because he has the qualities I feel that are most important for the next president. Race is not an issue for me or my friends. I think most people feel that way so I don't think race will play a big part . There may be some people who will allow race to dictate their vote but to me that is a shallow way of voting. To me,we are all equal no matter what color God made us. I wish more people will understand that fact and then maybe peace will come to the world. Skin color is not the issue at all....

Give me a break!! If this isn't about race and or gender I'm not an American.

First of all what difference does it make what money is spent on Sarah's clothes and hair. How much does Obama's suits cost and how much do his wife's. Mc cain's suit didn't come from Penneys either. It is time for a woman to be taken seriously and be in the white house. We woman have to encounter much more in life than men ever thought about and would not want to.

Sarah is nice looking, personable and intelligent. She's not qualified--at least she is the governor of a very large and important state---So was Reagan. What has Obama been in charge of????

I'm not saying either candidate is 100% right but it is obvious that Obama is a racist. His idea of let's make a change--means a black in the highest office in the US--not who is qualified.

I don't know if this will ever be read--but I am so mortified with ALL the news media--they are so one sided it makes me sick!!! I thought they were to report the news and information on both sides fairly.

Powell waited until the last minute to decide--yea right--he knew all along if he didn't go with Obama he would be chopped liver.

I think a lot of people are voting for Obama because he is black, he has no experience to run a country. Some people say it should not be about race then the same people turn around and call it a landmark presidential race?! So is it about race or not?!
