Why can't we talk about race?

I've seen this come up here and elsewhere. In the *very strange* thread about Obama's birthplace (or something like that; I couldn't follow the propaganda, quite frankly), two posters said that they wish Michelle Obama had not referenced race. (I don't mean to point those individuals out but merely point out their posts.)

In a country where race is a huge elephant in the room, I don't understand why we shouldn't talk about it. Of course this election is about race. For the first time in our country's history, a black man is running for president on a major political party ticket.

It doesn't have to be a bad thing or a good thing. But race is a factor in this election. It's not necessarily a factor because of McCain or Palin or Obama or Biden -- but because one of the candidates is black. Likewise, gender is an issue, simply because we have a woman on the Republican ticket. Why avoid the topic? Why suggest that the candidates or their spouses not talk about it?

I think that Sandy had a good point. It seems to me that anytime anyone criticizes Obama, *someone* will accuse the person of being racist.

Michelle Obama's quote, for example: why is not agreeing with Obama = being a racist? Why is questioning him = racist?

That bothers me. I think it'll be a big thing if Obama wins. What I'm scared of, though, is that we won't be able to question our President's policies without being accused of racism. That really bothers me.

I think race matters. Some people try to like it hasn't been a factor, but I think they are just fooling themselves. It's been obvious that it's a factor.

I feel that there will be some ignorant people out there that will let race cloud their judgement but i also feel there a re enough people with a brain that knows what has to be done in order to get our country back on track and obama is the best person for that .

Obama and his racist wife have made it an issue and that is one of the many reason I will vote for Sarah Palin and her companion campaigner. Unfortunately, even if Barry Obama loses, he will still be my do nothing but talk in morphing generalities, never doing any work as my state and now federal senator in Illinois

I think that Mr. Powell is a prime example of how the race will affect the election. The Africian American Republicans are now turning on the Republican Party and I think that this election is a joke and race is all it will be about! You've got millions of Africian Americans who are going to go out and vote for Obama and not even care that he has been lying to the American people throug this entire race. I think Obama is nothing but trouble and he will bring the end for us all and all people are caring about is his color, they don't care about anything else!

*SOME* Whites will be voting for McCain because he is white and because he is perceived to be more American...especially since he name is "american" enough.

First of all what difference does it make what money is spent on Sarah's clothes and hair. How much does Obama's suits cost and how much do his wife's. Mc cain's suit didn't come from Penneys either. It is time for a woman to be taken seriously and be in the white house. We woman have to encounter much more in life than men ever thought about and would not want to.

It is the nature of the beast.
