I was under the impression Sara Palin's child had downs not autism. How could he keep screwing this up?

he didn't say HER child .... he used it as an example of a high need currently.

He said that she knows all about the special needs of autism. Not sure how having a child with downs makes you an expert in autism.

He was including all special needs children.

then it would have been better suited to just say special needs and leave it at that instead of picking a specific group of special needs children of which she may or may not know anything about.

One of her platforms is special needs families.

That's not how it was conveyed to the audience. Hours after my original post and the pundits are picking up on it too.

McCain's words were that she understands autism better than anyone else...so that would mean that she deals with autism on a daily basis.

I'll wait on the transcript but that's not what I heard .... I heard she knows about special needs families .. and then he used the example.

These are the direct quotes from the debate as you were waiting for the transcript.
She'll be my partner. She understands reform. And, by the way, she also understands special-needs families. She understands that autism is on the rise, that we've got to find out what's causing it, and we've got to reach out to these families, and help them, and give them the help they need as they raise these very special needs children. She understands that better than almost any American that I know. I'm proud of her.

And I just said to you earlier, town hall meeting after town hall meeting, parents come with kids, children -- precious children who have autism. Sarah Palin knows about that better than most. And we'll find and we'll spend the money, research, to find the cause of autism. And we'll care for these young children. And all Americans will open their wallets and their hearts to do so.

Again...I'm not sure how she understands Autism better than most? I've also looked for her work with autism and I've found none. I can understand her knowing the challenges of downs syndrome better than most, but not autism. I find it telling that John McCain doesn't know the condition of his running mate's child. Either he knows very little about her, or he can't remember the very important details that shape people's lives.

No it doesn't mean she deals with it on an everyday basis.
