I was under the impression Sara Palin's child had downs not autism. How could he keep screwing this up?

McCain uses this phraseology quite a bit. He uses it when describing Palin's energy expertise as well. To me, he's out and out lying or he's got a limited circle of "Americans" that he knows. Palin is not a special education or Autism expert. I'm sure USA has plenty of those, many with a broader and deeper understanding then Palin. Being the mother of a 6 month old DS child (a child she probably spends a limited amount of time with btw), doesn't make her anything other than a mother with a DS child. Same goes for energy. She's not an expert. She just the governor of a state with lots of oil.

I think this is the kind of fallacy of association that people fall prey to all

That's great that McCain and Palin want the government to help families with special needs children and devote more research

That is tantamount to saying that someone with cancer is an expert in aids because they are both terminal illnesses. I don't see how she's different from any other mother who cares for their special needs child. And has anyone else noticed how the daughter is always holding him at public functions? I've seen Palin hold him once and it was very brief, and I've never seen his father hold him.

For someone that can bring attention to the cause I think it would be very important to speak directly of downs syndrome not autism of which she has no first hand experience. As for holding her child I think it would have been nice to see the interaction. I would think highly of her if she multitasked and shook hands while holding her baby.

She has a 13 year old nephew (from a couple of googled sources). She probably does have more experience with Autism than Downs Syndrome because the niece/nephew has been around a few years - Trig is only a few months old. I don't think any of this makes her an expert, but I think there is some logic behind this statement. I'm not a McCain/Palin fan but I don't think this is a valid criticism.

I have a nephew that has seizures I've given him his medicine and I've taken him to the doctor, but I'm no expert and with that logic my husband is an expert in the law because I have a law degree. Association doesn't give you experience or expertise.

I agree. This seemed to be an example of hyperbole that both candidates are fond of.
