He didn't expect them to engage in criminal activity like voter fraud? Are you joking? Anyone that naive should NOT be president and if he did expect it he should NOT be president. ACORN's criminal activity as relates to voter registration fraud is well known.
I know conservatives DESPERATELY wish that long-ago, vague associations and minor character issues were the focus of this election season, like they have been for at least the last two....but they're just not any more. It's funny, but when the public starts to come face-to-face with some REAL, home-front issues like $4 gas, a crashing economy, etc....they tend to lose most if not all of their interest in things like $2/signature petitioners and/or the micro-level intricacies of EITHER candidate's associations with them, ten or twelve years ago.
You can keep asking these questions, but I don't think you're going to get answers that satisfy you out of Barack Obama or his campaign. Not that they haven't answered, particularly, just that they haven't answered to your satisfaction. And that's what's really sticking in the craw of so many of the conservatives I hear from these days: the near-shock and disbelief in their voices that they're no longer able to strike fear into the hearts of (and compliance out of the mouths and actions of) Democrats. They just can't quite wrap their minds around the fact that people's reactions to their character attacks (which, don't forget, Rick Davis explicitly TOLD the nation would be the focus of McCain's campaign) is either to shrug and say "so what," or to actually stare with their mouths slightly open, as if they can't really believe anyone gives a rats tuchas about ACORN or Bill Ayers at this point.
I don't know how long it will take for them to get accustomed to that reality - I assume it will be after the election, at least. But I'm hoping strongly that the conservatives' reaction to it - and to reassuming the minority role in the government for the time being - won't be as it was when Clinton took office: attack, smear, investigate, stymie. The problems facing America now are too large and too systemic for that kind of partisan show-boating. And as the last election, and, I'm betting, this one, show, people are ready to start finding solutions and making progress, not deluding ourselves or bickering.
Many states won't even investigate ACORN, even with citizens calling the DA's office. That's because the state governments, like the federal government, are stuffed with DEMOCRAT employees like these DAs, with exception of our military. How many years are Philadelphians going to have more votes than actual registered voters? Democrats oppose election reform every year, and do everything in their power to sabotage improvements or suggestions. And this crew of Republicans let's them. So what are we supposed to do? Tell the media who are in the tank for Democrats?
the issue asked is why Obama wasn't honest (as confirmed by factcheck) in his answer ... you may find it a worthless and pointless issue but some do not.

none of that answered my question though

if you're content with untruth ... that's fine.
