Obama's False Medicare Claim
October 20, 2008
Updated: October 21, 2008
He accuses McCain of proposing to cut benefits. Not true.
Summary
In a TV ad and in speeches, Obama is making bogus claims that McCain plans to cut $880 billion from Medicare spending and to reduce benefits.
- A TV spot says McCain's plan requires "cuts in benefits, eligibility or both."
- Obama said in a speech that McCain plans "cuts" that would force seniors to "pay more for your drugs, receive fewer services, and get lower quality care."
- Update, Oct. 21: A second Obama ad claims that McCain’s plan would bring about a 22 percent cut in benefits, “higher premiums and co-pays," and more expensive prescription drugs.
Analysis
The Obama campaign began the Medicare assault with a 30-second TV ad released Oct. 17, which it said would run "across the country in key states."
Announcer: John McCain’s health care plan … first we learned he’s going to tax health care benefits to pay for part of it.
Now the Wall Street Journal reports John McCain would pay for the rest of his health care plan “with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid.”
Eight hundred and eighty-two billion from Medicare alone. “Requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both.”
John McCain … Taxing Health Benefits … Cutting Medicare. We Can’t Afford John McCain.
Obama: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.
The ad quotes the Wall Street Journal as saying McCain would pay for his health care plan with "major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid," which the ad says would total $882 billion from Medicare alone, "requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both."
Obama elaborated on the theme Oct. 18 in a stump speech in St. Louis, Mo., claiming flatly that seniors would face major medical hardships under McCain:
As the narrator says that McCain's plan "means a 22 percent cut in benefits,”

Obama, Oct. 18: But it turns out, Senator McCain would pay for part of his plan by making drastic cuts in Medicare -$882 billion worth. Under his plan, if you count on Medicare, you would have fewer places to get care, and less freedom to choose your doctors. You'll pay more for your drugs, receive fewer services, and get lower quality care.Update, Oct. 21: A second and even more misleading Obama ad begins: “How will your golden years turn out?” It states flatly that McCain’s plan would mean a 22 percent cut in benefits, higher premiums, higher co-pays, and more expensive prescription drugs, and claims that both nursing home care and a patient’s choice of doctor could be affected.

Yes, it is bad. Even if Obama's campaign is retaliating for the "terrorist" robocalls and flyers (those couldn't have scared old people, now, could they?) it is wrong to run an ad like that.
I'm disappointed that my candidate has resorted to the same, slimy tactics as McCain's.

Imagine that, a politician cherry-picking information and presenting it in a misleading manner.

The Social Security benefits are supposed to increase 5.8% but how much will the Medicare D increase, and the Medicare benefits for Health ins increase? how much of that 5.8% will be eaten up by increases in that? Most of the people doing the whining and bellyaching are far from collecting benefits from Medicare/social security. They really don't care about people who are struggling, they have "all the answers" so they think. Mostly is all a bunch of malarkey.
First, they want to deny abortions, is it because they don't want the Government paying for them, or is it because they feel they have the right to tell other woman what to do when it is a difficult decision between her and God and her Dr's, not a bunch of mostly men sitting on a bench in black robes? Then, they don't want her to get welfare or government assistance when she does keep the child(dosen't abort). Can't have it both ways.
They don't complain about their taxes going to support pre-emptive wars. Would they be willing to pay more tax if it was stated that taxes need to be increased to support war?
I keep reading and hearing the "Socialism" cry, I hope they realize that any job that people have that is being paid for by the taxpayer is their scourging word "socialism"Maybe I don't like my taxes funding wars or funding the idiots we have running our country either!
