Obama's False Medicare Claim
October 20, 2008
Updated: October 21, 2008
He accuses McCain of proposing to cut benefits. Not true.
Summary
In a TV ad and in speeches, Obama is making bogus claims that McCain plans to cut $880 billion from Medicare spending and to reduce benefits.
- A TV spot says McCain's plan requires "cuts in benefits, eligibility or both."
- Obama said in a speech that McCain plans "cuts" that would force seniors to "pay more for your drugs, receive fewer services, and get lower quality care."
- Update, Oct. 21: A second Obama ad claims that McCain’s plan would bring about a 22 percent cut in benefits, “higher premiums and co-pays," and more expensive prescription drugs.
Analysis
The Obama campaign began the Medicare assault with a 30-second TV ad released Oct. 17, which it said would run "across the country in key states."
Announcer: John McCain’s health care plan … first we learned he’s going to tax health care benefits to pay for part of it.
Now the Wall Street Journal reports John McCain would pay for the rest of his health care plan “with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid.”
Eight hundred and eighty-two billion from Medicare alone. “Requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both.”
John McCain … Taxing Health Benefits … Cutting Medicare. We Can’t Afford John McCain.
Obama: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.
The ad quotes the Wall Street Journal as saying McCain would pay for his health care plan with "major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid," which the ad says would total $882 billion from Medicare alone, "requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both."
Obama elaborated on the theme Oct. 18 in a stump speech in St. Louis, Mo., claiming flatly that seniors would face major medical hardships under McCain:
As the narrator says that McCain's plan "means a 22 percent cut in benefits,”

Obama, Oct. 18: But it turns out, Senator McCain would pay for part of his plan by making drastic cuts in Medicare -$882 billion worth. Under his plan, if you count on Medicare, you would have fewer places to get care, and less freedom to choose your doctors. You'll pay more for your drugs, receive fewer services, and get lower quality care.Update, Oct. 21: A second and even more misleading Obama ad begins: “How will your golden years turn out?” It states flatly that McCain’s plan would mean a 22 percent cut in benefits, higher premiums, higher co-pays, and more expensive prescription drugs, and claims that both nursing home care and a patient’s choice of doctor could be affected.
As the narrator says that McCain's plan "means a 22 percent cut in benefits,”

I didn't question Obama's honesty.
I will flip the channel when I see a bit of the commerical....I will have to jot them down or I'm sure you will say that proof is needed or something.
Greatly Missed, Never Ever Forgotten
I'm not a liberal so it can't be a liberal spin.
Anywho...ONE of those WOW's is a "who is obama ad" with it being whispered/stated over and over again in the background.

Well why not let us know now since they were so WOW, surely you remember at least one of those WOW's.
---
I'm sure there's nothing wow in them at all, but it follows a pattern that'd led to a very simple fact: An overwhelming majority (64%)of people polled on Foxnews.com agree that McCain runs too many negative ads, that by the definition used (mentioning your opponent) is 100% negative.
And you know, as an Obama supporter I love what I'm seeing from you and others like you, which of course is just like the McCain campaign; All you talk about is Barack Obama.
There are so few Pro-McCain posts and threads by you and other McCain supporters, because there are so few McCain positions people know about, all you guys do is the same thing, like some kind of twisted obsession;
You talk about Obama.
It's no wonder everyone's talking about Obama and why he's going to be our 44th President.

Reward Republicans for 8 years of failure? No way, No how, No McCain!
So if the ad is a lie...and Obama says "I approve this message" aren't you calling him a liar?
Or is that different in your eyes?

What's stopping you from doing that, are you that put off that you cannot match what's removed and save it yourself? I make pretty modest money and can do that, and I'll be getting an additional tax cut from obama.
Simple - the money that has been taken from me as Social Security I have no choice as to how it is invested.
ROFLMAO - if people were allowed to invest their own money, they would be better off than under the SOCIAL security system.
I used to think that but
Greatly Missed, Never Ever Forgotten
so you aren't "questioning obama's honesty" because you already believe him to be a liar?
