Well, what do you know! Al Qaeda supporters support McCain--- wanting him to continue costly war.

I tend to think we need to leave too but I am just not sure how ... and I am just not sold on the 16 month phase out.

I completely agree about taking any purported al-Qaeda endorsement with a grain of salt. Do keep in mind that it is a terrorist organization. They do not care about preserving manpower. You are helping them when you "martyr" one of their leaders. It brings them countless new recruits for one thing. Bin Laden wants to destroy America. There is no reason to doubt that he means every word on those tapes quite seriously. His best hope of doing is that is exactly to keep the US actively engaged in unwinnable fighting in Iraq and any other places he can get them to do it.

I say "unwinnable" because history shows that a conventional army almost inevitably comes up short against a guerilla force. You can not win such a war AND keep any kind of loyalty from the population at the same time. Vietnam and ALgeria are both good illustrations of this.

There we can agree. As much as I think we should never, ever have been there in the first place, and even if we HAD to, not with an inadequate force, it is a genuine problem to come up with a workable plan for getting out. Still, IMO, a way has to be found.

if it was a regular old soldier I'd accept it more but I think the loss of a higher up stings just a little .. and yes one thing I do think BL is honest about is that he is out to destroy us.

But based on the concept of none of them being important ... they really won't care if we kill BL himself ... another one is ready and willing to take his place.

I think a way must be found too ... and that's one reason why I am so anti-Obama.

One might hope that killing their leadership would have an impact, but in terms of their goals and strategy, I really doubt it. That is why taking on an organization like this head on is exactly as constructive as trying to cut the heads of the Hydra.

It is hard for me to judge. My rough guess is that the best idea is to make a clean get-away quickly, but cover as many of the political angles at the same time (i.e. a deal with Iran, some strategy on Pakistan etc), as well as a credible effort in Afghanistan.
