<McCain can't even get his campaign to move in a straight line.>

I recommend a read of the following article: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200810/mccain
After reading the hard copy version, DH said he wondered if McCain, due to his imprisonment, actually knew at an emotional and visceral level, what sort of effect the Vietnam war had on the population of the U.S. His hypothesis is that McCain didn't really "get" the extremely divisive nature of sending hundreds of thousands of young men to a conflict in a country far from the shores of the U.S. And here's another point to ponder: the domino theory didn't hold. Vietnam's choice to embrace communism did NOT result in other neighboring countries making that same decision. Flawed logic then about ideology, flawed logic in the Middle East now.
Moreover, it bears repeating to McCain backers--if your candidate is a rash war hawk, who do you think will fight in whatever conflicts he sets up as "tests"? The draft will almost certainly have to be reinstituted since the all-volunteer armed forces are strained by over five years of impasse in Iraq. National Guard units have neither training nor equipment to justify their overseas deployments for prolonged periods. In other words, McCain backers might find themselves in the unenviable (for them) position of having to back ideology with personal sacrifice.
