Not to speak for sw, but socialism is most often limited to an economic system. That is a rather narrow interpretation of the word, and basically sets us on two different tracks, when both are in fact intertwined.
Any form of community is a form of socialism. We can loosely associate, or we can heavily associate.
I'm pretty certain that we've established that rather heavy association is the right way to go, but even with this, there is a wide range of approaches that might be taken.
Obama is hardly proposing socialism, and McCain knows it. He also knows the only chance in hell he has of winning is to call Obama a socialist. It is an utterly ridiculous and outrageous claim, and to me it says more about McCain and his willingness to sell his soul to be elected than it ever says about Obama.
Early in this campaign, I stated a wish to concentrate on the issues and avoid cutting the other candidate down. Yet what has unfolded is McCain, in his desparation, doing this to Obama. He can't win on policy, so he tries to win by making irrational claims about the other candidate.
I watch this, and see one candidate has clearly acted like a president, and one has acted like his favourite toy has been taken away until he plays nice. I can hear him stomping around and slamming things in his room even now.
McCain well served this country. That does not mean he gets a pass on screaming at people, pushing them into walls, or making exaggerated claims about his opponent.
McCain is no fascist; Obama is no socialist. I surely hope most in this nation can see that we have two candidates who fall into the American mainstream, but on opposite sides of that mainstream, rather than candidates that fall to the outside of the complete spectrum of political ideology historically.
1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2.
procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
3.
(in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.
I don't see anywhere in there that socialism = representative government.
Unchecked capitalism left dead along railroads, dead in factories, countless maimings, very rich versus destitute, with no middle class.
There would be class warfare sooner or later, and it would not be pretty. Water seeks level, and that is what would happen. We have courts to litigate. Litigation can set precedent. We also have a UCC and that carries how business is transacted. A government has to exist and it has to sort disputes, it has to set a framework that protects those involved.
A society without government would be hell on earth, just as a society of a government with absolute power would be hell on earth. I rather like counterbalancing forces.

lmao, good! You planted that earworm with the gist of your post, and I've been stuck with it ever since.
I'm also contemplating how socialism relates to the circumference of a circle (writer's license - dropping the 'e.')

Absolutely and totally wrong again.

You must not be around any historians much, then.

When the government takes over pie production:

"socialism" is not "representative government"

In a way, one could also argue that representative government

I do.
The corrupting element in capitalism is government interference.
