Misogyny and the left

This election has been a revelation for me - I never suspected this much latent sexism existed on the left.

This does not mean my outlook shifts right, hardly... but as a feminist, it does open my eyes to the extent of change needed in this country.

Raising the issue is frequently met with hostility and derision by those who openly espouse misogynist viewpoints.

The best way to promote a liberal cause is not by tearing others down. Obama's very message is for this to end, and that he will help facilitate bringing it to an end.

If one is for Obama, then it might be nice to consider that aspect of his message.

Yeah, I have seen a lot of misogyny of late.

Tearing others down is always a bad thing (something I can't say I have never done.)

I have heard some people say they are voting for McCain-Palin because "she's hot."

This made me laugh because I have heard the same thing from a couple of people.

Thank you for your essential sanity and clear-headedness. Sadly, it appears to be a rare commodity these days.

As a "real" feminist (lol), it is embarrassing to watch women with serious flaws hide behind their inadequacies by crying sexism. Competent and truly qualified women in politics

I didn't mention the right because we always assume so much misogyny is of the right, at least that used to be my assumption. Now... I see it runs across the entire political spectrum.

Out of curiosity, can you give a couple of specific examples?

I have said this to you before, but I was also surprised/shocked/disappointed.

For me, a real eye-opener was how incredibly horrible certain women on the left were to both Hillary and Sarah Palin. The one that stands out the most for me is Maureen Dowd. The sheer disdain she felt for Hillary Clinton dripped through all her columns during the primaries, and she treats Sarah Palin the same way.

Like I said before, criticize policies- don't use gendered insults!

I remember one week during the primary the NYTimes ran Dowd's column ranting against Hillary Clinton in such mysogynistic terms and then right next to it, a column by a young woman who had started her first job and was surprised there was sexism in the work place. I wanted to write a letter to the editor and ask him how in good concience he could run those two pieces together (or at least, how he could do so and keep a straight face).

What happened with Palin after she was nominated was awful, relating to her family (preggers daughter)
