Obama's aunt, the one he mentions in his memoirs, is living illegally in the United States in PUBLIC HOUSING!

So your husband turned them in because the bf was a drug dealer or murderer?

WE aren't but could you really get past the slavery issue? I don't think I could. I won't actually ever know since I am not African American and my family is only 3rd generation so we had no relatives here during the slavery era, but I just don't think I could get over that.

Do you think the black families of black people that sold slaves get over it?

first the only reference is not in msm .. so it's likely bogus.

huge difference though between 'get over it' and 'holding people in the now responsible for their ancestor's actions' ... don't you think?

slavery was disgusting and horrible ... but I am not responsible if any of my ancestors had slaves.

I really don't know, as I said before, how anyone would 'get over it'. The whole concept is abhorrent to me. And yes, I am aware of the history of the slave trade. I just didn't know this about McCain's family so I am just a bit shocked right now. There are families where I currently live that probably owned slaves and there are descendants of those slaves who still live in this community. I often wonder about them as I go about my day as well. I had to do a local history as part of a graduate course a few years ago and was surprised to learn that some of the names I see - street signs, families, buildings, towns, are remnants of the slave history. Sometimes I have a student in one of my classes that is a descendant of one of those families - and I wonder. The whole thing bothers me, but I guess it was just the shock of learning it today. I don't know.
