I don't doubt that the family owned slaves and that there are black people in the family -- it's true of many families today (and
indeed our history isn't the prettiest
Incredible so both of our presidential candidates are products in one way or another of the slave trade? I am utterly amazed. I wonder if this has happened in recent history? Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter - well probably Carter I guess. I just never knew that. I don't know how I feel about it.
Mexico's biggest problem is it's corrupt government. America's prosperity has helped improve the economies of many countries. But some will blame the US for everything.

You conveniently forget for well over a century American business exploited people and resources from around the world.
It is what is... but it helps to remember when people try to get here, we *helped* create the dichotomy in conditions that made this flow inevitable. If you wish to end it, you can try and fail via building walls - what does that do for our image as a nation of freedom? Or you can try to address the actual causes, in cooperation with the governments of the region.
It isn't a matter of blaming, it is a matter of finding an actual, workable, long term solution. People love to talk tough, play up the miltary aspect of things, but we should know by now force does not accomplish much of anything. Addressing uinderlying conditions does.

OT...
If I want to stay in the US for longer than a tourist visa (=3 months) , so say for a year.... The first thing I'm asked, is who my 'sponsor' is. If I don't have one, and cannot account for own amount of $$ to live on for that period, I don't get permission to stay.
I don't know how that 'works' for refugees (if aunt is one?), but it could be an option? It doesn't mean that he has to take care of her financially, just be accountable/responsible should there be financial or legal trouble.
When my aunt emigrated to the US in the 40's, with a green card, she had to have a sponsor until she was able to apply for citizenship.
I know something about immigration. I came to this country under refugee status, and after a year of living here I had an option of applying for a green card. 5 years later I became a citizen.
Now there are a lot of different statuses in US,
So before a judgement is passed, educate yourself on immigration procedures.
Where did I pass judgement, or why do you seem to believe I even want to?? I shared own experience and that of my aunt (whose sponsor was NOT a relative), and I asked a question!
Thank you very much for the other info.
