Hidden Audio: Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry

By P.J. Gladnick (Bio | Archive)
November 2, 2008 - 07:26 ET (Please read update about the San Francisco Chronicle neglecting to mention Obama's willingness to bankrupt the coal industry at bottom of this blog.)

Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing. This audio interview has been hidden from the public...until now. Here is the transcript of Obama's statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):

Thanks BO, my state gets a goodly percentage of its electrical power from coal. Way to improve our standard of living.

Yes but if you do a simple google search you only find bloggers with this story - really credible. BTW coal powered plants are a major source of pollution in China maybe you caught some of the problems with that during the Olympics? The push is to find ways to develop clean coal technology so we don't produce energy at the expense of our health and the environment. If we build new coal plants before that technology is developed we are stuck with the pollution. I think you missed the point.

Perhaps the point is that "cap and trade" is a nifty way for Obama to redistribute our wealth - not only to his supporters in the US - but to despotic leaders of third world countries throughout the world.

Perhaps the point is that refusal to advocate for US energy independence is a way to ensure that Middle East nations who support terrorists can continue to get $700B a year from the US.

Perhaps the point is that a man whose primary experience is working as a "community organizer" in an impoverished Chicago community - which remains impoverished after two decades of Obama's "help" - is not qualified to be president.

Not very likely. Or maybe you would prefer for the world to get so polluted that we can't breath?

janetheteacher was correct, it's only out in bloggosphere. You may try again when it hits the MSM (even FOX is ok).

Do you have any links that can back this up?

It only makes sense that he would want us dependent on the Middle East oil industry, after all he stands to...oh, ok, ooops, nevermind. I was thinking of George W Bush.

Don't worry about Obama being qualified. Worry about if there are enough McCain votes out there to beat Obama.

Why should this poster try again? Did you listen to the audio? It is indeed Barack Obama saying that his policies will bankrupt the coal industry, which would not only hurt those whose jobs rely on coal, but it will hurt anyone who uses electricity. Why should we wait for the MSM to report on this. Apparently the original newspaper cited didn't want to. Listen to the audio for yourself. Don't wait on the MSM.

Coal supplies most of this country's electricity. It is cheap, realiable (unlike wind), and it can be clean. My husband is an electrician at a coal power plant, and now Obama is directly threatening his job. I'm sure that Pennsylvania would love to hear this quote from Obama. Let's hope that the MSM does get this out and quick. This only goes to back up why Biden said what he said, that coal was not for America but only for China. Not only will Obama's policies bankrupt the coal industry, but the entire United States.

It gets even better. Apparently Obama goes on to say:

The problem is, uh, can you get the American people to say, “This is really important,” and force their representatives to do the right thing? That requires mobilizing a citizenry. That requires them understanding what is at stake. Uh, and climate change is a great example. You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.

I hope there are a couple others he has plans to bankrupt, too, like the tobacco industry and the gambling industry.

You compare the tobacco industry to the coal industry? Do you actually use electricity?
