Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing. This audio interview has been hidden from the public...until now. Here is the transcript of Obama's statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):

Taking something out of context is not fair.

he did say they'd be bankrupt b/c of fees/etc ... but no he didn't use the word industry I don't believe.
I listened last night and could be wrong.
You need to understand that the kind of technology he's talking about right now doesn't exist, as far as I know. He will create, in his own words, "the most aggressive cap and trade" policy that can't be attained with current technology. He will then charge coal power plants money for each unit of co2 that they emit, thus bankrupting them. He then said that he will use that money to put toward alternative energy.
Obama said, "If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted,"
The important thing to understand is that there is no current alternative energy that can do what coal does. It is cheap, reliable, available, and it can be clean. Just not clean enough for Obama's aggressive cap and trade. Coal
he didn't say industry - he said if someone wants to build a plant THEY will be

Nothing has been taken out of context. Watch the video yourself, context doesn't help him on this one. Our country is in a recession. How will it impact the country if electricity prices skyrocket as Obama said, " Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." I'm thinking it won't be good.
and it won't ever exist if big coal and big oil has their way...
Simply not true. At the coal power plant that my husband works at, they voluntarily have lower emissions than the law demands. They are currently ahead of the regulations, and they work hard for that, but they won't stay
How do you know there will be no grandfathering clause for existing coal plants? Obama talked about someone who builds a plant, not about those already in existence.
Skyrocketing energy costs are not necessarily a bad thing. That's what forces progress. Had we raised the federal gasoline tax in during the 70s oil crisis, we wouldn't have suffered this year's as we would already be driving cars that get 50 mpg.
Remember, the President does not make the laws--Congress does. What's important is that we elect a leader, and intelligent one, who LEADS us in the right directions toward safe, lean sources of energy and toward conservation.
