Do you pick your church based on your opinion, your comfort level, your enjoyment of the music, how much you like the coffee lady's clothes? Or is theological truth the priority?
You will never find a church where all the leaders agree with you on everything and you don't go to church to learn politics but to learn theology.
Oh that is terrible. I come from a mix religion family, Christian Ortodox/Islam. And as a child I learned about both religions equally. I wouldn't say I am one or the other, but I do respect religions and what they stand for. I did try and go to couple of churches here in US, but I have not found something for me. The church I went to couple of bible studies were interesting, I felt the need to be spiritual, but once the members started bringing up current events/other countries, and grouping people and saying they are bad people, really left a bad taste in my mouth. I never went back there again.
I think it's one thing to talk about theology, but to bring politics into it, and how one group is better than another, is not something I want to be part of.
Her post read to me like this was shared at church. Of course her minister is entitled to share his peronal opinion with friends and family like anyone else.
Why would you presume to decide for others why they go to church? You seem to feel there is a "right" reason and a "wrong" reason.
The first principle of my church lies in promoing the inhernet worth and dignity of every person, for us anything less than true equality is abhorrant. I would imagine folks who find it possible to vote away existing civil rights and believe "separate but equal" is reasonable would find our theology difficult and choose not to attend.
When people attend any church with thought and study and prayer I'm all for it. The people who act like church is social club without thought or attention to their theology and sacred texts - they trouble me. For example I've had people tell me I should change to a faith that would be more comfortable for me but I understand my church's teaching, I see it in scripture... I may not *like* some things but its not for me to argue with God.
On the other hand I have left churches whose leaders preached things clearly not in scriptures.

True about the boss and grocer, but in my case, my boss and my grocer do not have "tax exempt" status.
