This country is going to go to sh#t if Obama wins.

The change is that you are no longer going to have change in your purse.

Why do you think the government is in terrible shape...and what, SPECIFICALLY, did the Republicans do to cause this?

This congress has been a disappointment. That being said, Bush shot them down on anything they did try to do. The Democrats haven't had total control, as the Republicans did for the six years before. There is more than enough blame to go around. The crisis didn't start during the last two years. It started with Reagan's trickle down economics. Washington was warned even then of what could possibly happen. Clinton didn't help things when he signed NAFTA. Bush liked trickle down economics, as it made him and his friends very wealthy. The Keating Five made things worse by deregulating banking industry. This gave rise to all these mortgage companies, and unscrupulous bankers. They signed people up any way they could. They didn't care what happened to the borrower, as they sold the loan to a bank, thereby getting their money. Enter Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. It wasn't their demise that caused the crisis though. It was the failures of big businesses. McCain's attempt to get a bill introduced for regulations (after a change of heart), failed while still in committee. For unknown reasons, Republicans killed it. That was in 2005, while the Republicans were in total control. Democrats have a share in the blame, but nowhere near what Reagan and Bush have. (Bush was warned two years ago of the impending housing bubble burst, and chose to ignore it also).

I'm watching this live on CNN from Melbourne, Australia, and I'm fascinated. Polls are closing right now, apparently. I'm nervous on behalf of the US!

"Exactly...but if Obama wins, there will be a LOT of conservatives discretely snickering behind their backs when, like Clinton, Obama admits that "we" can't afford the "tax cuts" he promised and his "free health care for everyone" evaporates before their eyes. Then we'll also chortle as we hear their bleats when family and loved ones start losing their jobs and whining because prices for everything have gone up. . . ."

Uh huh. That's what conservatives said about Clinton on taxes and the budget deficit. Then Clinton raised taxes only moderately and balanced the budget. All around Clinton, from Reagan to Bush I to Bush II each of them smashed the record for budget deficits for all Presidents before them.

So when the Republicans march out the parade of horribles again, just think about the horrible economy and state of foreign policy these know it alls and ungracious losers drove us into. And to those Republicans who are not mouthing off on this night, to those Republicans who are honest and honorable, stick with it! Please reform your party!

And now it's been announced as I write: President Obama. God Bless America!

>>give what a chance? He bailed out wallstreet, which means he will succumb to pressure. So what will he change?<<

The last time I checked McCain also voted for the bailout. So if Mccain won tonight, could I have said the same to you?

Obama does not have a national healthcare plan. His policy works with existing plans and providers -- it does NOT set up a whole new "national" healthcare system. Therefore, there won't be an option for businesses to drop their current coverage and offer their employees crappy national healthcare.

You have a point with the redistribution of wealth, as people making more will certainly pay more in taxes. I don't envision the US turning into a socialist country just yet, though. The US has been through far worse than higher taxes on 5% of the population and I imagine we will weather this without any radical ramifications.

I respect your opinion, but I don't see either of these Obama plans changing the fundamentals that make this country so great. JMHO.

HE bailed out Wall Street?! Singlehandedly? If I'm not mistaken, it wasn't his plan, the house and the senate had to vote on it...that includes McCain. It's beyond belief to accuse any one person of bailing them out! The Republican, Paulson, wanted to give it all to Wall Street, with no accountability whatsoever. Can you imagine how bad that would have been?! No one is happy with bailing them out, and from what I have heard one Senator say, they didn't fully understand what they were giving away. Rushed once again, into making a rash decision. No one person gets the blame for the passage of this travesty. They ALL gave in!
