Why Obama Won

Obama won on his own terms, strategically and symbolically. He rolled up a series of contested states, from Colorado to Virginia, long out of Democratic reach. And his victory reflected the accuracy of his vision of a reshaped country. Racism, much discussed, turned out to be a footnote, and the African-American voter turnout was nothing spectacular.

True, but I was merely rebutting her assertion. Nothing more.

In the long run, those who couldn't vote for him because he was a black man (and let's be honest, there were many. While my father would have voted for Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice, I think he'd also say they weren't really black.) were defeated.

I'm 49 and white. I voted for Obama.

My husband is 51 and white, and he voted for Obama.

My best friend is 49 and white. She voted for Obama.

Another friend of mine is 49 and white, and not only did she vote for Obama, she volunteered for him.

I visited the local Obama campaign office twice. I saw a whole lot of white people who could hardly be referred to as young.

Did you see any of his rallies? Did you see anyone who wasn't young or black? Thought so. Lots of 'em, right?

If all he got was votes from those who are either young or black, he would not have won. Those are just the facts.

It sounds like you're HOPING that he will fail. Sounds a bit un-American to me.

Just sayin ...

“If, by a ‘liberal,’ they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties – someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a ‘liberal,’ then I’m proud to say I’m a ‘liberal.’”

I'll have to disagree. With the race as close as it was, I think there were a lot of hold outs who reacted once the Obama election was a fact, instead of a "good" possibility.

Well, I hope you're disagreeing with the business "experts" who I was quoting, but maybe you too can make that claim.

I'm sure the slap at the young and minorities was quite intended....
