Do you think it is appropriate or inappropriate for high school kids to chant Obama's name (or the name of any political figure for that matter) in the hallway of school in between switching classes?

>>It isn't a shame. There is no time for debate between 4th graders. <<
I also think that attitude is a shame. I remember vividly discussing Bush/Clinton/Perot in fifth grade. We were very capable of discussing. I also remember discussing Bush/Dukakis in first grade. Still able to discuss. How are children ever going to learn how to debate and create thoughtful arguments if they're told to shush the moment they try and speak their mind?
>> We live in a very republican area. There were 4 black children in the classroom that came in and make the remark. I knew what was about to happen. <<
What, race wars among ten year olds? I don't blame you personally -- I don't think a classroom volunteer should try to moderate or even have to run interference but I DO think it was the job of their teacher to moderate
>> Last week in the classroom the children had an election and McCain won 17 to 6 in the class. Now when the yelling started I stopped that too. There is no need for that kind of behavior in a classroom. No one should be made to feel bad about their choice in this election at this age. The behavior last week and this morning was not celebrating it was about a HA IN YOUR FACE. I wasn't going to have that in the classroom.<<
No, surely you should not encourage yelling. But there is a space between yelling and silence -- it's called discussion. Why not acknowledge how emotional this has been? As an adult, surely you can understand how a black child in a heavily Republican area must feel like the odds are against him sometimes, and how inspiring and EXCITING this election must be for him -- can you entirely blame him for letting that spill out? Kids need somebody to help channel their energy and excitement into productive action and thought.
>>Well as for leading by example. I am not the one here that says that a political party is narrow minded and less educated than the other. Yet we have a teacher on this board that has said that, and believes it. Talk about leading by example. That is scary.<<
Well, maybe if someone had sat him down as a little kid and said "you should learn to respect another's opinions" he wouldn't be that way. (Probably not, but there's always wishful thinking.) Anyway, I still think your signature comes off as disrespectful and petty, and it's not fair to blame fourth graders for that behavior if you aren't above it as an adult.

What's with the drama?
<My son was sad this morning when McCain lost, and asked me how people could vote for a man that is friends with a man that wants to eliminate Israel.
