I always felt she was being used to win women voters, young, old, middle aged, moms, grandmas, etc....

I'm not a fan of hers and I while she doesn't seem to view this as "being used",

Dole used despicable ads to try to smear her opponent by implying that she wasn't a Christian.

So you think a Senator should lose her seat because of a political ad?

I hate that term "used." It implies victimhood and I have a suspicion the issue would never even come up if Palin wasn't a woman. Shame on Steinem.

We are naive if we imagine that any Vice Presidential candidate is chosen because they are "the best person for the job." They are chosen to shore up the perceived holes in the Presidential candidate. Just as Palin was chosen to appeal to the conservative base, Biden was chosen to give Obama some gravitas and shore up his lack of experience. Likewise, looking back through history, you will see that all VP candidates are "used" as the ying to the Prez' yang.

Furthermore, this campaign catapulted Palin into the national consciousness. I had certainly never heard of her before this year. She will likely go on to hold a national political office someday (when the pendulum swings again). So if she was "used" it was to her own advantage -- actually, maybe it was she who "used" McCain.

Absolutely, it's not like it's never happened before. In many ways, this goes to the heart of Obama's much mocked message of change, that we're not going to do it this way anymore.

It's not about just one or a few political ads, it's how we do things and how they as politicians connect to voters. The throwing of slime and obsessive character assassination attempts didn't fly.

Besides, she was seen as one of the least effective Senators serving.

To quote the words of Bob Seger:

I used her,
She used me,
Neither one of us cared.
We were getting out share.....

For one who was being used, she seemed singularly enthusiastic!

I agree with your entire post, but will highlight this:

"I hate that term "used." It implies victimhood and I have a suspicion the issue would never even come up if Palin wasn't a woman. Shame on Steinem."

SO very true!

(btw, good to 'see' you again :-)

If a senator chooses to lie in her ads, the voters will make their choice. If the voters see through the ad and give her the boot, than she has no one to blame for herself.

Her ad clearly showed what she thinks of people who do not belong to her faith.

I want people in office who will work for ALL the people of the state, not just people who share their pet religion.

Obviously, it depends on the ad. This one was awful and Dole is on record not only defending it, but creating and releasing a follow up ad along the same lines.

Have you seen the ad? Many are calling it the worst political ad to ever to air. Here's what Fox News said about it:

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/11/01/dole-trails-democratic-rival-hagan-north-carolina-senate-race/

The quote I find interesting is this one in Dole's unremorseful follow up ad: "If Godless Americans threw a party in your honor, would you go?"

What is wrong with Godless Americans? Are athiest citizens somehow criminals? I don't get it.
