Obama's girls have a nice school to attend; if public education is so great, how come his girl's don't go to public school?

I understand the point Robert Bobb is making. However as a parent, I also respect the Obama's right to choose the school they want their children to attend. Why should they be expected to use their children, to satisfy the whims of others, or to make a point? They have every right, and duty, to make decisions based on what's best for the children. They don't need to answer to anyone, for the decisions they make. Next, we'll have the ever critical conservatives telling the Obama's how they should be bringing up their children. I didn't hear them criticizing Bush, for the picture of one of his daughter's at the beach, sans underware. Had that been one of Obama's daughter's, I can only imagine what the conservatives would have said! Who are any of us, to be telling any parent how they should be bringing up their children, or which school's they should (or shouldn't) send their children to?!

Actually, the description fits conservatives much more than it does liberals. It goes with the conservative's me, me, me, and to he-- with you mantra.

That had nothing to do with his choice to send his children to private school.

Especially now that the US Supreme Court has basically made it legal in Washington D.C. to carry an unregistered handgun.

It is interesting that you mention this:

"And probably it would be best to keep those individual teachers from putting any of their own stamp on the educational process of children. Surely we could find a text for all teachers to simply recite from to make the process uniform."

Because that is exactly what NCLB has done in some cases. Some of the reading programs are entirely scripted programs and some of the math intervention programs 'recommended' by NCLB have really taken teacher creativity and modifications to meet student needs right out of the classroom. Navigations is one of the programs I have to 'teach' several times per week. It is a highly scripted, boring program. My school, and specifically my students, have always made AYP but the county did not. Therefore the entire county had to introduce 'interventions' across the board. I am actually losing instructional time from what I would normally teach to 'teach' or recite this mindless program twice a week for 45 minutes. It is mind boggling!

If you look back through the thread, I pointed out that it is illogical to both criticize the Obamas for sending their children to a private school AND condemn public school systems.

I asked for proof of your statement that teachers' unions only serve themselves.

NEITHER issue has been addressed cogently.

And just to further muddy the waters, now you're adding ("Ditto") parents and communities at large. Huh? Ditto what? That they don't look out specifically for your children?

I'm sorry for not being clearer, I was being facetious with that comment, as a response to the line that it would be dangerous for teachers to create assessments for their students.

I entirely agree with you about scripted programs.

Personally I applaud Obama for sending his kids to Sidwell.

I recognized that you were being factious, I was just pointing out, for those who were unaware, that while it was a factious comment, it is actually already occurring under NCLB. Just when you think you have heard the stupidest things about 'education reform' someone gets in there and does something even dumber. It is truly a wonder our kids are learning anything at all since 'special interests' have pushed their curriculums through under NCLB.

I've been reading this thread, and what I don't understand is this...

if the standardized testing in NCLB works so well, why are the schools still so bad?
