Obama's girls have a nice school to attend; if public education is so great, how come his girl's don't go to public school?

I think it would be important to have more measurable criteria than that, don't you?
Thank you, nicole_ftm for my siggy!
>>> Are you suggesting that everyone do what the least of us can do because those folks don't have a choice? People who may have the means and opportunity to do something shouldn't do it because another doesn't have the means and/or opportunity?
Isn't that the theory behind Obama's "spread the wealth" policy? If Obama were to take the money he intends to spend on his privileged children and share it with those who are less privileged, won't everyone be better off? Isn't that how you fix our education problems...from the ground up?
>>> Newsflash: anyone can send their kids to private schools, provided you have the money and your kids are smart enough to get in. Heck, at a lot of schools, they don't care how smart your kids are, as long as your money is green.
But isn't that there the social inequity is? Obama's all for spreading the wealth around, but apparently not as much where his own family is concerned.
When I was teaching at the American School of Kinshasa in Zaire, my director told us about a study they'd conducted in one of his schools.

It never ceases to amaze me how determined some people are to bundle up every theory into one to slay their opponent.
I thought this thread was about public schools, and the positive and negative sides of vouchers, but alas, I was mistaken.
It is incredibly tiresome to try to debate and discuss when some persist in trying to poke little holes in various imperfections to prove that a particular person is good or bad.
Can we ever, pretty please, just stick to talking about a topic and discuss it's complications, merits, and deficits?
Is that too much to ask?
Thank you, nicole_ftm for my siggy!
The original post asked if President-elect Obama thought public schools were so great why were his own children not attending them.
It would appear greenie75 isn't the only one with these questions.
Mayor Fenty wants the Obamas'--and all new DC residents--to consider public school for children

WASHINGTON--Mayor Adrian Fenty told me Tuesday he hopes the president-elect and Michelle Obama--and all new District of Columbia residents--give some thought to enrolling their children in public schools.
Fenty commented the day after the school shopping Michelle Obama toured Sidwell Friends and Georgetown Day, elite private schools . The Obama girls, Malia, 10 and Sasha, 7 attend the University of Chicago Lab School, where Michelle serves on the board.
"Our goal is to have DC public schools be as serious an option as any charter or private schools, not just for the Obamas' but for any family making the decision," Fenty said.
Fenty and D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee have been trying to overhaul the troubled school system. Fenty said there are schools the Obamas' could consider that are achieving results on par with the private schools here.
The mayor, an early supporter of president-elect Barack Obama, told me he would not personally pitch the incoming First Couple. School selection is "an extremely personal decision for any family," he said.
He does want to send the message that there are D.C. schools "that can compete" with private schools.
"By this point people realize that under Chancellor Rhee we are moving the system as fast forward as humanely possible," Fenty said.
And this closing note from the mayor: "Please write that we are fixing this system for all the children of the city."
The last White House child to attend a public school was Amy Carter.

If the Obamas decide to send their children to public school, will that change your opinion of the public schools?
Will it change your opinion of Pres-elect Obama?
Since he will be our President, there is no longer a need to campaign against him, so in my opinion, where his kids go to school is irrelevant.
