I think that the GOP perpetuates this myth, hoping (I guess) that Democratic politicians will temper their embrace of the non-center-right positions/policies of the constituents who voted for those same Democratic politicians.

I think a lot of it is simply because the Villagers know what their corporate bosses want to hear and, like every talking point, they repeat it over and over again. It probably is a GOP talking point, but it's not clear to me whether it started with the Village media class or the Republican Party. There isn't much difference anyway.
They really are. It's actually surprising to me just how invested they are in their extremist Right ideology now that Karl Rove has tried to give it mainstream credibility. I really hope they continue the drive to nominate the Huckabees and Palins of the Republican Party and block all attempts at making the GOP more moderate.
