Here in my Class 3 small city in PA, the mayor and council wanted to pass a law saying that any gun owner whose gun is lost or stolen must report it within 72 hours of discovering the loss. This was an attempt to put some controls on straw purchasers, who can buy as many guns as they want. Then they sell them to criminals. If a gun is used in a crime, they can go back to the purchaser of record. Right now, that purchaser can just say, "Oh, well, that gun was stolen months ago."

The local newspaper used it as their informal, unscientific poll of the week: "Do you support a law that requires gun owners to report loss or theft within 72 hours of the discovery of the loss?" Overwhelmingly, callers did NOT support this. And it's safe to say that only peole who care about this issue would take part in the poll. I doubt that criminals bother to respond to newspaper polls. So it must have been legit gun owners who voted No. The mayor & Council tabled the issue. Then somebody wrote a letter to the editor saying that "the vast majority of responsible gun owners" would support such a law. Apparently not around here.

Why would a law-abiding gun owner not support this law?? If

Sydney, while we aren't out buying ammo or a new gun there is a reason for this.

*YAWN* i'm just saving myself a penny or two (or more) for when Obama gets in office and raises an outrages tax on ammo and such. paying $180 for what we can pay $30 on today is fine with me. even if he, does nothing, prices are going to go up and ammo doesn't go bad, so either way i saved money over the next 8 yrs or so depending on how fast we go through our stockpile.

This is what I meant in post 22 about wanting NO controls. Why is it not reasonable to have some controls over the weapon that kills the most victims most easily? Do you hunt deer with an assault weapon?
