From a 2006 interview on his mandatory civil service plan...

I think he had it at 18, but we were saying

Well, I feel you are completely wrong. I don't want to go back and forth, no point to that. But, I disagree, Bush has done a very good job. I don't like the over spending and trying to appease the left, but he has kept us safe from attacks. I think he's been a strong leader, and history will see that.

Judging by what I've seen watching presidents from Kennedy to Obama as president-elect, the only one who was over their pay grade on the go in is the current president.

Judging from the comments on this thread, it seems the left is much further left than I thought.

Mandatory service to the government... hey what's wrong with the loss of freedom? I seem to remember the left up in arms about the loss of freedom we all experienced from the Patriot act (although I don't know of anyway it's affected me or anyone I know, aside from not being blown up by a terrorist).

So, I guess you are all okay with Obama wanting to take your freedom, I guess that's why you voted for him.

I am not for mandatory service, and I'm a 'leftist.'

I am for a provision that prohibits a president from starting a war without personal sacrifice - I've proposed this before, and it surely would never go anywhere but... it would work something like this: if Bush thought Iraq such a wonderful idea, then the price to pay for that call is resignation. If he feels strongly that it is a good idea for the country, resign. And I strongly suspect we never would have gone anywhere near Iraq.

What if you could only declare a war against a country that had not overtly attacked you if you could fully fund the war. For example - Afghanistan was complicit in the 9/11 attack so that war is 'ok', but Iraq had not actually done anything but rattle sabers so that war could not be waged unless it could be fully funded - as in the citizens are willing to raise taxes to pay for it. If you are willing to raise taxes then go to war - fine - otherwise no war?

I'll bet if you had to raise taxes before going to war there would be fewer wars - again, before anyone starts slamming me, remember I said wars against countries that had not overtly attacked us.

There are probably a million ways to do this, and your suggestions are good ones - that tax one might actually be passable!

Hardened hearts? LOL! Thank God Obama is here to make our lives better...and to make the sun shine brighter...and to stop the rising oceans...and to stop the cows from farting...

So if something happened and we go to war in any of the next four years, you think Obama should resign?

How about we make a law that Congress can not raise taxes unless all pork barrel spending is eliminated from the federal budget? Further more, taxes would automatically be reduced by 10% p/year until pork barrel spending is gone
