How many years of pork barrel funding would be necessary to equal the 1 trillion spent on Iraq?

And the key word there is many. I just saw one estimate placing it at 20 billion... so that is 50 years.

That sorta puts that dumb war in perspective, eh?

You seem to be comparing apples and oranges here. The pork barrel spending, unlike the war, never protected me or the world from some evil dictator. It's worth every penny.

Actually I am of the opinion that some pork barrel spending is good and some pork barrel spending is bad. Ultimately focusing on pork barrel spending is like a red herring - it takes the focus away from the more wasteful expenditures and allows the national debt to grow. Kind of like worrying about dropping a quarter in the street while I am spending $8.00 a day for a cup of coffee. Sure the quarters will add up - but not as quickly as the $8.00 cups of coffee every day. (not that I would ever buy an $8.00 cup of coffee)

Agreed... it boggles my mind that people do not question this cost. It has put our country in a huge economic hole.

How is it just and moral? We attacked a country that had not attacked us.

Remember in the 1980s, we armed the Mujahedin in Afghanistan because the Soviets were in their country? (which by the way, by a Republican administration, created what is now al qaeda and the Taliban. Nice going.)

Anyway, George's dad the right thing and bailed at the end of the first Gulf War, though he did make a few mistakes, but I'll not quarrel with that, on the whole, he did ok.

We imposed the no fly zones, and Saddam was effectively contained right through the Clinton years - nothing changed when GWB took office, other than he and his team running around fabricating a story to sell to us - Iraq was harmless to us, yet we attacked them.

The America I grew up believing in did not attack other countries unless they first attacked us. And we need to go back to that philosophy. The action was shameful, a sorry day for this nation. And while people supported it initially, they did so because we were given the wrong set of facts. Now that they know the truth, they want us out, and never would have supported this to begin with.

If prior to the invasion Bush told America it would cost us 4,000 soldiers and a trillion dollars, with no real end in sight, and no improvement in conditions in Iraq, if we knew what he knew - no WMD's anywhere there...

we never would have approved of this war.

What we are saying is that you are all over 14 billion dollars; we are all over 71 times that amount. It would take 71 years of the spending you are ranting on to equal what we have spent on Iraq.

Now which amount would you rather cut?

Protected you from Saddam? We needed to break our economy to protect you from someone who owned a pea shooter and lived 7,000 miles away?

He was not a threat to this nation. And the resulting action has made us less secure, not more secure.

Our mililtary is now at its weakest point in my lifetime.

We have antagonised people all over the world.

Safe? Har!
