Has it always been this way?

I'm just wondering, since I've only been coming here since October - always under the same name, mind you.
Has it always been this way?

I wish you would stay.
My user name is third in usage, but both of the predecessors are still active and usable, should I choose to do so - and first started on iV on 1 February, 2001 - there are probably 150,000 posts on iV written by me during that time.
Anyway, I changed to this

I've never been one for dramatic exits, but I felt the need to share why I'm done with this board.
The board is cyclical. Believe it or not, I've seen worse here than what's been on the board since October.
We've had substantive debates about a variety of issues--not so much lately but that too is a cycle. One thing is certain. If one wants to participate in the dialogue, it helps to have a thick skin.
I was here before in another incarnation but several days ago, without warning, my log-in failed. Multiple log-in attempts, requests for tech assistance, and efforts to find out "why" later (to no avail), it just seemed easiest to re-invent myself and move on. Bites because my handle had been around for years. C'est la iVillage?!
There's a reason for the proscription against both politics and religion in polite conversation. People identify closely with their choices, often for reasons which are based far more on emotion than logic. Questioning those choices does result in defensiveness and negativity. Nature of the beast to some extent, exacerbated by the anonymity of the Web.
You got more than your share of personal attacks in the days right after the election. Unfortunately, the board isn't moderated over the weekend so garbage that goes up on Friday afternoon will often stay up, well into Monday. Other times, there are so many reported violations that considerable time goes by before the nasty stuff comes down.
I'm sorry that you are choosing to leave. If you reconsider, please know that at least one other person here would be delighted to see you return.
I believe it's not the board that's bothering you. It's the climate in America that the board reflects.
This board happens to be one of the few good neutral boards on the web. I like it because people with all opinions get in the mix.
People on the board also happen to be smart.
We all try to be respectful of other posters.
Whatever you decide, be well and be happy.
Best, SD
I've been here since October (same name, too) so I can't say if it's always been like this. I know I've posted this before but in case you didn't see: I used to post on Liberal Parenting. I really enjoyed that board and the posters, too. After a month there, everytime I went on I couldn't add anything because everything I would've said was already posted. I started lurking here and it was.....uh.....different. I don't know why I stayed but I'm still here. Some of my favorite posters have left. Some of the ones who I wish would leave do but come back with a new screen name and the same old nonsense.
Anyway, I see you have 4 kids and with the holidays coming I am sure you will be too busy to be here posting or lurking. Maybe a break and you can come back after the new year? I know I will miss you but if you don't come back I wish you and your family the best life has to offer!
