It's a tragedy, but I don't see how the store is responsible for any type of payment to the surviving son.

Are you saying stores should not hire black people because some white person may randomly shoot them and it's for their (the black person's) protection that cannot be hired?

Are you suggesting that stores should ask a customer before entering a store, if they have a weapon and if they are targeting a particular race or gender for the day?

The woman was stocking shelves at her place of business. A business should provide a safe place to work without risk of being murdered. The company should be carrying insurance in the event of accidents etc.

Workers comp is supposed to cover people when they work at their workplace, thus the definition of "Workers Comp."

I just went to Dollar Trees site and wrote to them - as I was looking at the site I shook my head when I saw their Mission and Values statement (which I don't believe any company takes seriously).

Mission & Values

Our Mission Statement - the words we live by:

Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. is a customer-oriented, value driven variety store, operating at a one dollar price point. It will operate profitably, empower its associates to share in its opportunities, rewards and successes; and deal with others in an honest and considerate way. The company's mission will be consistent with controlled and profitable growth.

Corporate Values

Using just 21 words, we have instilled the values that guide our associates. It's not the number of words that count, but the words themselves.

    Attitude
    Responsibility, Integrity, Courtesy

    Judgment
Do the Right Thing For The Right Reasons.

    Commitment
Honor and Respect for Self and Company

The only true way to make sure the employees are really safe is to lock the doors and keep the customers out. Probably not a good idea for a business to make money!

That's despicable.
