taking Hillary's seat in the Senate? I think the people of New York deserve whatever they get.

Would she be just appointed into the role or would the people get a chance to vote? If whoever the replacement turns out to be was an appointment without the benefit of an election, then one could argue that the people DON"T "deserve whatever they get" because this would be a matter of fate or circumstances in which they had little say (I mean, if one takes that view, then it's just a tiny step to imply that they might have "deserved" 9/11 as well).

In regards to Caroline Kennedy, I had no clue as to what her qualifications might be so I had to look them up. Doesn't seem all THAT bad to me....

Professional life

Kennedy is an attorney, editor, writer and member of the New York and Washington, D.C. bars. She is one of the founders of the Profiles in Courage Award, given annually to a person who exemplifies the type of courage examined in her father's Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name. The award is generally given to elected officials who, acting in accord with their conscience, risk their careers by pursuing a larger vision of the national, state or local interest in opposition to popular opinion or powerful pressures from their constituents. In May 2002, she presented an unprecedented Profiles in Courage Award to representatives of the NYPD, the New York City Fire Department, and the military as representatives of all of the people who acted to save the lives of others during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Kennedy is currently President of the Kennedy Library Foundation, a director of both the Commission on Presidential Debates and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Honorary Chairman of the American Ballet Theatre. She is also an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics, a living memorial to her father.

Kennedy has represented her family at the funeral services of former Presidents Ronald Reagan in 2004 and Gerald Ford in 2007, and at the funeral service of former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson in 2007. She also represented her family at the dedication of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park in Little Rock, Arkansas in November 2004.

I was speaking in present and future tense, not past tense, so your 9-11 suggestion isn't valid.

New Yorkers elected Hillary knowing that she wasn't planning to serve her entire term.
They deserve anything that they get.

Actually, they elected her knowing she would probably run in the Primaries (but not that she'd win). She didn't win, as it turns out.

Also, who could foresee back then, that she'd be offered (and take) the position of Sec State? Heck....until last week, it looked as if she would just keep on as New York's senator.

If the Republican candidate for Senate in your area (I'm making a leap here and assuming you're a Republican ;o)...had been expected to throw their hat in the ring when the primaries rolled around, would you have voted against them for that reason?

.....Just curious.

"Would she be just appointed into the role or would the people get a chance to vote? "

I didn't see that your question was answered so I'll take a swipe at it. In Illinois the governor appoints someone to fulfill the remainder of his term. I assume, but am not 100% sure that the other states handle senate vacancies that occur during the elected term the same way

Appointment by governor and special election when the next Senatorial elections occur, in this case, 2010.

Thanks, is that for all states? Obama has 2 years left in his term, so who ever gets his seat will simply finish the remainder. From what you are saying, if he had 4, the appointment person would fill 2 years and then there would be a special election, because that is when the next general election occurs. Do I have that right?

Maybe I'm too cynical but doesn't it seem odd she is part of Obama's team.
