I find myself horrified by such an action, even given my low opinion of his destructive 8 years as President. A sad denouement to his Presidency. I feel sorry for him, even if he created his own Karma by how he did his job...

But I don't share your kind-hearted attitude towards Bush. He deserves far worse than a pair of shoes thrown at his head but is very unlikely to ever be held accountable or responsible. The man is a world-class want-wit. Look at the this bit from the link you provided: "He declared the war "not over" despite recent gains". That's been the story of Iraq for five and a half long brutal years. Won't acknowledge that his goals were met repeatedly and shifted repeatedly.
Iraq has been a Pandora's box which Bush opened; and he has chosen to fixate on "hope" at the bottom, and pour more money and lives into something which has no definite limits or benchmarks. History will not, if there is any justice, judge him kindly. As far as karma, one imagines his next life as an amoeba--or maybe if he starts right now to make restitution, a gnat....
The journalist had been kidnapped, held for ransom, and beaten according to Martha Radditz.
Muslims don't wear shoes into their mosques. They're left outside the door. Maybe that plays into why throwing shoes is considered to be particularly defamatory.

Humour aside, I agree, throwing something like that is ridiculous. He's a journalist, if he disagrees... write something.

There is some symbolism in the use of the shoes.
