Disappointed with the Speech
| Tue, 01-20-2009 - 12:53pm |
I was actually a little bit excited about the inauguration ceremony today and anxious to hear our new president's speech. It could have been so good. It could have been inspiring. Instead I thought it was a downer. It seemed like President Obama is still in "campaign mode". He needs a new speech writer. President Clinton would have understood that the nation, so excited by this historic day, would want to hear an inspirational speech on a day like this. I think he blew a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am a little sad instead of excited after hearing it.

Congratulations on your new president :)

That's all well and good, but I am speaking specifically regarding my state, Nevada.
What exactly would constitute Obama "being a white guy now"?
I have no idea if you are the only minority on here.

Because the media and the press were all over that angle anyway....because there are MANY serious problems facing America (not just one)....because while he didn't say a lot in that speech - what he did say was poignant and to the point (sometimes less really IS more)....because he made a special point of swearing on the Lincoln Bible....because he already covered it so eloquently in his fantastic race speech not so long ago....because he stated that he was EVERYONE's president and planned on governing that way....because he IS bi-racial, not just black.....because he addressed the issue of race the day before on MLK day as well as in a number of pre-inaugural interviews....because maybe he wanted to be judged by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin....Need I go on? I've got more.
Probably the happiest day of my life was the day that Barack Obama was elected president. I have cried and cried with happiness many times since. I cried yesterday and the day before.
My dad thought his speech was a white guy speech. I don't want to go on and on about it because I don't want to dampen the spirit of the occasion. He thought he was not true to us in that speech. He expected more. I kind of agree, but it's not that big of a thing to me. Not as big as the occasion for sure. If you want, email me and I will tell you how to contact my dad. He'll give you an earful.

I actually am overjoyed about the implications of his race and what it means to America (and the world). It was a seminal day and waaaay too long in coming (I had tears in my eyes a couple of times). The person who I was addressing that claimed to be disappointed in Obama's wasn't because she was black....It was (maybe partly) because she is a Republican and a McCain supporter.
I thought Obama struck JUST the right note. There's a fine line between doing something with class and dignity and overkill.
More importantly, I do believe that Obama wants to be remembered for getting elected because he was the right man for the job, NOT because of his race....For him to belabor the point would have raised questions in those only too eager to find fault. I think how he handelled it was classy and befitted his personality and character.
