Jim Adkisson took his conservative beliefs to the max by entering a church in Tennessee and opening fire.

<<There are some real wackos out there on both sides of the fence. It's a shame they are media heads that are allowed to spew their vitriol and create so much animosities. They are the ones who have done this, These are the ones who have divided this nation. What is so incredibly sad is people LISTEN to them! People BELIEVE them! what is even more sad is they are PROUD of themselves to be doing this sort of thing.

To deny that pundits have no influence over public opinion is to deny the power of their techniques.

I'll ask again........

How come the vast majority doesn't run around killing people after reading/hearing what you and others (left and right) quoted?

Should the pundits from both the left and the right

I am curious. Where do you see a link between Charles Manson (to whom I assume you are referring) and ideologues? Seems like a very long stretch to compare Adkisson to Manson, IMHO.

While true that the vast majority of listeners, viewers, and readers know better than to act on their baser instincts, the fact remains that some "entertainers", seemingly most notably on the right, do their damndest to instill fear and hatred of those who don't buy their proprietary brand of bigotry and fundamentalist ideology. Look at the titles of Coulter's and Hannity's books for proof positive. I have talked to people within my own family who are whipped up about "liberals". They have severe misconceptions both about actual events/words and liberal ideology--based in very large part on the dreck coming out of the likes of Coulter, Malkin, Hannity, etc.

Nutcases like Adkisson aren't going to disappear entirely anytime soon. But the amount of invective which comes out of the media and internet (and from my observation, most markedly originating on the right) is not conducive to anything but divisiveness and antipathy. Democracy doesn't work well when "compromise" is considered to be a dirty word. Again, "majority rule, minority right". Limbaugh, however, has no room in his heated rhetoric for anything but total victory of his warped political agenda.

I am an independent, not a Democrat. Maybe that explains why I believe that certain things cannot be legislated, much less enforced. Bad speech at its worst, is still free and we should be exceedingly reluctant to muzzle anyone without thinking very long and hard about risks/rewards and possible long-term consequences. But fingers can and should be pointed at the worst of the hatemongers on both sides. Their excess, illogic, vituperative speech, and the utterly appalling spectacle of such as Adkisson is THEIR responsibility and they should not be allowed to shield themselves as "entertainers" or "just joking". There is a responsibility to speak temperately and logically in the public domain, little though they appear to realize how vital that is.

In a nutshell, political bigotry and its purveyors are no more appealing or moral than racial or religious bigotry.

Calls for violence, murder and genocide.

If it's on public airwaves, pretty easily.
