Since you 'take exception', see Julian Bond's speech last year, which I link to below.
Finding kinship with the struggle of another group is not co-opting its issues or struggles, it points out there are similarities, and whether the issue is being gay or colour of skin, oppression is heinous and does much harm.
In any case, Julian makes the case far more eloquently than I can.

I agree on the need for disparate groups that address issues important to them, but it becomes problematic if they cease to look forward toward those who oppress and instead begin to start fighting with each other, something that seems to unfold here.
