No, the state acts in the best interest of the state which may, or may not, coincide with the best interests of society.

There's nothing in your reading of the 14th that guarantees a right to gay marriage.

It's rather interesting, isn't it, that none of the cases used to push gay marriage relied on the US Constitution or the 14th amendment...

The case in MA relied solely on the Commonwealth's constitution, the cases in NJ and other states have all relied on the state constitutions, not the 14th Amendment.

Really? I cannot say what I wish, within the usual reasonable accepted legal bounds?

Actually, it is sufficiently ambiguous that one could argue the point, but then again, successful argument is another matter, and politics does play a role in how liberally the amendment will be interpreted.

and I again question if you really are as open minded on this as you claimed in another post, because you damn well know this is folly.

Ya know what... I think I'll end the conversation here.

He should have been allowed to visit him. I'm not against that.

FYI...

My motherboard just died (I was visiting it at the time), so I pulled my 8 year old computer out of moth balls. It'll be a few days before I resurrect the other one.

I guess where you lost me is in how vociferously you came after the subject from a pov you claim not to hold. I saw nothing flow the other way, and if I err in this assessment, my apologies.

~The previous poster didn't make any distinction for what is "morally or ethically appropriate", so I saw no reason to be so bound in my response.~

That's okay, it was my interpretation so I offered it :)
