"When someone actively funds something that hurts those I love as well as me, yeah... expect that I will not meekly roll over and be kicked into submission. At certain points, groups who are oppressed begin to counter the oppression. So if that means 'we went after them like dogs', woof. "

I'm well aware many of our laws have their beginings in other countries.

I disagree with Obama, as well as other Democrats on this, and I actively say so.

Just trying to bring some levity to this thread.

As an aside I didn't know that about Portia either - not that it mattered to me either way. But I remember back when Ellen's sitcom was canceled due to her open gayness, that was a shame - it was a good show.

I've known for a long time now, but not before the show ended its run.

The days of Ellen and is she or isn't she, that seems so far away now, but not so much in calendar time.

What is different is society - and me.

I came out, and right along with me, society started the long ascent to growing up.

Neither was easy, the harder job the latter. We move forward, never straight, always forward, and we will get there.

I guess it depends on your point of view.

I imagine the coming out part is hard - I remember when my cousin, Michael, 'came out' although I was quite young at the time. His parents, my father's sister and brother-in-law, didn't speak to him for years. My wedding was the first big family gathering he had been invited to. My aunt was thrilled to be able to see him under the circumstances, my uncle almost didn't come. His sister Peggy, who later came out, spent years going from one failed hetero relationship to another while abusing drugs. While in drug rehab she finally admitted feelings she had had for years. Since then she has been a much happier person.

Having watched two of my cousins struggle with coming to terms with their 'gayness' and watching their family, and mine, come to terms with it as well I just don't understand why this has to be so hard. Accepting that my cousins had a different lifestyle was never difficult for me, and I credit my parents with that since they modeled acceptance of both their niece and nephew. My children have had friends, both male and female, who are gay and it has never been an issue so I do see progress. I just hope we continue to move forward.
