>>> It's been supported, and it's part of our history. Quotes have been provided in this thread and others.
Well, this thread is where the discussion is...and so far, I've only seen one attributed quote and a whole lot of comments attributed to "they" at sometime in the past.
>>> We, as a country, have oppressed before. Too bad we didn't learn from it then, as a lot of time and effort could have been saved.
Embrace polygamy.
>>> The end result will be the same--Equality.
Chaos...liberalism...a nation with no values and no sense of itself.
>>No they were not.
Sometimes there is just nothing to say.
<< Gays are bullied? Not that I've observed. Statistically, you stand a better chance of being attacked for your religion than you do for being gay. And denied rights? Again, it's a false argument because everyone has the same rights. What gays are asking for are extraordinary rights...and most conservatives would probably be willing to extend all the same rights that marriage confers, but extremists on the left are unwilling to compromise and make this demand for social parity ACTUALLY a demand for rights...and so they make it a fight to the bitter end.
>>> There is no request for 'extraordinary rights', only a request for equality,
Marriage is the union of "a man and a woman"...all people in the US have the same civil right to enter into this institution. Those who wish to alter the institution to fit their particular peccadilloes are asking for extraordinary rights.
>>> but the vehement opponents of same sex marriage believe that discrimination is ok,
Many sinful behaviors don't receive social sanction.
>>> that bullying and denial of rights are worthy American traits in the finest tradition of slavery, segregation, and genocide.
Pulling out the "greatest hits" again? LOL! It's always amusing...especially the "bullying" bit...after all, it was the Bullying proponents of gay marriage who attack and intimidate those who disagree with them.
>>> You mention 'willing to extend all the same rights that marriage confers' where you admit it is a right. Thank you.
I think the courts felt it was a "civil right." I disagree, but for the sake of discussion, it isn't that big of a deal.
<< You stand a better chance of being struck by lightning than to be murdered because your lgbt...and you might as well make references to Hitler for all the relevance your trying to associate gay marriage with genocide and slavery.
>>> Here... watch it twice.
Here's the love...the tolerance...the intimidation...the bullying...the attacks...watch it twice.

>>> Go tell him what you told me.
I somehow doubt that we'll be bumping into one another...perhaps it would be more expedient if you just emailed him my comments.
>>> We will not accept civil unions because it allows separate and unequal to continue.
That's too bad, because a compromise that would afford you the same rights will be easier to acquire. But it's a shame that your agenda isn't really about equal rights.
>>> We will win, and I hope to be around on that day. I will sit there and think back on what it took to get there, and smile.
I'm sure a lot of folks felt that way in California last May.
...and I've not seen any push to make the religions rules concerning marriage of any religion apply across the board to other marriages.
You keep saying it won't happen because you've never seen a past instance where it ever has...so what, just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it can't happen.
>>> Marriage is not "only" defined as a union of a man and woman.
Has someone with the appropriate authority redefined marriage and didn't tell us?
>>> Three states in this country already have legal marriage for both heterosexuals and homosexuals.
Which three are those?
>>> 18000 couples in California are legally married as well.
Grandfathered in, so far. It will be interesting to see how the courtroom drama plays out.
>>> A number of other countries also have legal marriage for both heterosexual and homosexual couples.
True...but they can call their cats "fish" and it still won't make them fish.
>>> So, despite the protestations...legal marriage is already extended to both gay and straight couples.
True...but as far as I know, there was no authority that redefined "marriage."
>>> Soon enough, it will be the law of the entire country.
I'm sure many folks in CA felt the same way last May.
>>> You're correct..thousands of years of history won't disappear. But one would think we'd learn that oppression doesn't win. It didn't win with slavery, with prohibiting womens rights, with segregation, with banning inter racial marriages.
Well, you'd have to be oppressed first. At the moment, every citizen has the same right to marry. If some want extraordinary rights, they should campaign and win votes to their side...not bully, intimidate and attack those who disagree.
