Laura Bush is a smart Republican

To my surprise, it turns out that Republicans are right that Laura Bush deserves respect. I only wish she had expressed her views sooner.

"In her new book, Bush discusses how she asked her husband not to make gay marriage an important issue in the 2004 election. After mentioning those passages, King pressed Bush to clarify whether or not she supported the legalization of gay marriage and clarify she did.

“Well, I think that we ought to definitely look at it and debate it. I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally being between a man and a woman. But I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has.”

For the record, that makes Laura Bush a stronger supporter of gay marriage than Barack Obama. However, the surprises from the interview didn’t end there. After talking more about gay marriage, the discussion moved to abortion where Bush had an equally liberal viewpoint.

“I think it’s important that it remain legal, because I think it’s important for people for medical reasons and other reasons.”"

Yes, she has taken some hits. But she is very enlightened on important subjects like the right to choose and gay marriage.

Contrast some big mouthed phonies who have been lying to the right on key issues:

George Rekers, a co-founder with James Dobson of the Family Research Council, recently was caught doing exactly the opposite of what he told everyone else they should do. He is preaching homophobia while hiring gay escorts, including from the "rentaboy" web site. Then when Rekers is caught he says he just needed the young man to carry his luggage. Then a photo comes out of Rekers carrying the escort's luggage in the airport.

Why doesn't the right listen to people like Laura Bush instead of the George Rekers, Larry Craig, Ted Haggard and Karl Rove types? Why? You are smart people. I'd really like to know why.

As much as I disliked Bush, I was appalled and furious when the media made a big deal about their 19 year old daughters being caught "Underage" drinking. Sorry folks, but 19 year olds drinking is NOT news, no matter who they are. When I was 18, it was PERFECTLY legal for me to drink in several states. So the laws have changed, and adults between the ages of 18-20 are not legally allowed to drink, but many do, and BFD. I thought is was awful that the media decided to drag these two young women through the mud, because some had a political beef with Bush Jr.

I never really had much of an opinion of first lady Bush one way or the other, but I thought it was cruel and insensitive to bring up that tragedy from her youth. I have never seen any credible evidence that this was intentional, and I'm sure anyone who has to live with something like that is in enough pain, without anyone pouring salt in the wound, just because they don't like the politics of her husband.

I absolutely HATE it when ANYONE starts attacking someone's family members, and I don't care WHO does it, I just loathe that sort of thing.

edit to correct the age of the Bush twins
