I know what you mean. I have been to other boards where you have to enter text, but they usually accept the space bar as text... but this doesn't seem to even accept that. You could always just put a :) or nt in the body. I also noticed that the subject line doesn't seem to be as long as before either.

There is an archive link at the top of the board. All of the archives are not there yet, but they will be soon. Now, these archives are from the old boards. The new boards will not archive at all. All messages stay on the board. Those with replies get moved up (to the front of the class, so to speak).
