running to lose

Hello: A friend told me that if I run everyday for 30-40 minutes and eat no more than 1200 calories a day (I now eat about 800 cals and am taking vitamins) - that I could lose at least 10-15 lbs. a month.

I am 30 years old, 230lbs. and 5'7.5" - Ideally, I would like to weigh 160-70 lbs. Will doing the above get me to my goal? So far, it has been almost 2 weeks and I have lost 6lbs.

A year ago, I was at 276lbs. and was strictly eating no more than 1200 cals a day, but I was not working out so I feel I have reached a plateau.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

The body is a very complex thing, and I myself will not even start to pretend I understand it LOL .... maybe you should look into finding a nutritionist, or a dietician to help you understand it better ... maybe even just talk to your family doctor or maybe he could recommend someone who could sit down with you and explain it better :)

Have you tried Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds? they are great! i would definitely recommend those :)

Wow - I could not be more humbled by such great and honest replies. This has definitely been a learning experience. AsS a result - It is lunch time and I have already consumed 400 cals. Normally, by this time I have only eaten 200 cals. We shall see.

Again - thank you all so much. I am not worthy.

I'm a runner, too. I ran competitively in high school and college and I'm starting to get back into it after much too long a break. It can be great for you if your joints are in good shape and you don't have back problems. But like any exercise, if it hurts, like really hurts and not just muscles burning from effort, you're doing something wrong.

As far as your drastic calorie cutting, I'm not a dietician but I do recommend upping your calories. You need 1200 a day just for your body to function normally. If you eat less for a long period of time your body stores fat because it thinks you are starving and it also starts breaking down muscle to divert energy to the more essential tissue like your brain and heart. Less muscle = slower metabolism and again you will plateau.

I second the idea of seeing a dietician/nutritionist to evalute your caloric needs for your size and activity level. It may be more than you think.
