Nice to Meet you...

Hi, My name is Angie. I have been overweight for the past 8 years. In January of 2003, I had gastric bypass surgery. Due to a mechanical failure, I only lost 20 pounds. I am so disappointed in myself. I need to lose over 100 pounds, but I feel like it's insurmountable. I have kicked up my exercise and GAINED 6 pounds. It's embarrassing! I just feel like such an absolute failure at all weight loss programs. I mean, I can't even get gastric bypass to work! (Granted, the failure isn't my fault, but I feel like it is.)

I guess I just wanted to introduce myself and read through this board and join in to get some encouragement. I look forward to reading your posts.

Hi Angie, I'm new too, and I just saw your message, and I wanted to write back and give you some encouragement: before I had to quit Weight Watchers cause I lost my job and ran out of money I learned something that might make you feel better. A lot of people actually do gain some weight when they step up their excerise program, espically when they start using muscles they havn't before or working the others harder. Those muscles will retain some fluid for a bit, which is what causes the temporary weight gain. I hope that helps you, and that you stay motivated, cause I know how you feel! Anyway, hi, and I'll be seeing you around the board! ~Diane~

Hi Angie and welcome to the board! I am sorry to hear about your problem with the surgery, are they going to do anything about it? As for the weight gain, it might just be muscle that's what happened to me last week. Are you taking body measurements? I am and it really helps, i measure chest, bicep, hips, waist and thigh weekly and i've seen a change each week also i weigh weekly. It's important to weigh yourself around the same time weekly because your weight goes up and down during the day.

Have you changed any of your eating habits (Weight watchers, atkins or less calories)? Good luck with everything and i hope u stay on board and post often =)

Hey Angie! Welcome to the board. Wow..sounds like you've had a rough time, but maybe that weight you gained from upping the exercise is muscle gain!? It very well could be, muscle weighs more than fat as I'm sure you know. In any case, welcome and I hope you feel at home here.

Hi Angie,

Welcome! That must be frustrating having the surgery not work for you. I can't even imagine! Keep up the exercise, though. Don't worry about any weight gain from that. As the other posters have already said, muscle weighs more than fat, so it's actually a good thing! Keep it up, and soon enough you will see the pounds come off. Good luck with your journey.
