Cholesterol/blood glucose tests

On Saturday I had a fasting blood glucose and cholesterol test. I got the results back today, and it's kind of a mixed bag. My total cholesterol level was 162, which is great, but my blood glucose was 108, which is, according to the new guidelines, pre-diabetic. I wish I'd had this test done three months ago so I could see if the numbers have dropped. We'll see where they are in a year.

There's a strong history of diabetes in my family, and while the doctor didn't seem concerned by the blood glucose results, I'm a little concerned. I mean--I'm 23 years old! I guess I'm just wondering if anyone here has had their blood glucose levels tested and what you've been told by your doctors in terms of preventing diabetes or "treating" pre-diabetes.

Well, it was a fasting blood test, so it had been about 12 hours since my last meal. Like I said, the doctor isn't concerned, but the change in guidelines has been pretty recent. I think I need to bring my weight down some more and see what happens. My mom is pre-diabetic, her parents are both diabetic, and all of her grandparents were diabetic, and it's just something that's always concerned me.

I too have "pre-diabetes" also called INSULIN RESISTANCE.

There are many informative articles about this, it has also been called syndrome x. I am on medication for mine. I have to take it twice a day. All it truly does is help process the sugars properly. I do not monitor the levels or anything else. But what you doctor needs is to make sure they do the drip the icky stuff and a test your blood every hour to see how your body processes the glucose stuff.

Just because you do a one time reading that is high your next one may be normal. Most of the time when they do blood work ups glucose is one of the things they check. Call old doctors and get a history if you can.

Good luck!

Oh, the misfortune of having to use the student health center. No glucose tolerance test for me. And I've never had blood work done before, so there's no previous tests to compare these against.
