OK, this is something I keep running into. I am trying to sharpen the skills of listening to my body to know when it is full and when it's not. I continually take that one extra bite I shouldn't. Do any of ya'll that are sweet and wonderful have any experience with this little lesson of eating?

I'm being sweet and wonderful, at the moment, so I'll answer that!

I almost take that next bite all the time. I try, if I go out to eat, to not get any dessert. But if I do anymore, it's of the fruity variety instead of the chocolate variety, and I only ever eat half. I try to share with someone else, but if no one else wants any(very rare) then I just have to put down the fork and say no. It's just like, that Meridian commercial that used to be on. It shows how not eating half your meal may look like not much right now, but if you look at it over time, all the food you are not eating, it's a bunch. So, I think of it that way. If I look at all the half meals that I left on the plate all week, that is a bunch of stuff I didn't add on to my body.

I was brought up with "if you're full, don't eat it" as my family's mantra...but I can understand how it's hard to leave a bite of anything tasty.

Mentally calculate how much you are going to eat. Usually when food doesn't taste as divine as the first bite, you're full. What to do with the rest? put it away IMMEDIATELY, get a doggie bag, or empty the salt shaker on your plate so that you aren't tempted to eat any more.

I have this problem too and it's hard to not take one more bite, or that last bite, or whatever the case may be! I usually know I've had enough, or I can feel that I'm full but I go ahead and take that bite anyway, ugh!

I've started to try and do this... A book I'm reading on dealing with emotional eating suggested this for a woman who was raised to "eat everything on your plate". At first leave a pea size amount of food on your plate, the next day leave the amount of 2 peas, and so on until you are comfortable with leaving *something* on your plate. Eventually those last bites don't tempt you so much and you know you are ok with not eating them.

Another thing I read today in Prevention magazine suggested rating your hunger on a scale of 1-10. 1 being you are starving and 10 being overly full. Every time you eat try to figure out where you are on the scale so you can become more aware of what your body is really telling you. If you are eating at a 7-10 then you don't need anymore so put the food down!

Hang in there and keep trying!

Put your fork down b/w bites and don't pick it up again until you've chewed and swallowed the bite you just took.

If I keep track of my calorie count during the day (rather than adding it all up at the end of the day), then I have an idea of how many more calories I'm allowing myself to eat at dinner, and I magically feel full after eating dinner! I guess the gist of my post is that it's okay to clean your plate, as long as the portions on your plate are balanced and in line with your calorie goals for the day...and sometimes the easiest way to accomplish that is to use smaller plates. It's kind of a mind game.

And Karr,

I know they say "Everything is bigger in Texas", that don't mean you have to eat Texas portions! lol That is one of my boyfriend's favorite phrases(being from San Augustine himself)

i count calories, so ther are times i may still 'feel' hungry but that's all i can have to stay within my calorie guideline i made. your dietician should be able to make a menu for you and tell you how much of the food to eat. After awhile your body will get used to it.

I am a big fan of mind tricks. I eat on a salad plate instead of a regular large dinner plate so it SEEMS like I am eating more and somehow the same amount of food fills me up.
