g'mornin' everyone,

First I'd like to thank all the people who welcomed me to this board and gave me some great ideas! I think I'm really gonna like it here :)

I've come to the conclusion that I've dieted myself up to my present weight of 290. I started dieting about 20 years ago...I had 20 lbs I wanted to lose. I lost about 10, and then put 20 back on...that's been the cycle. Lose some put even more back on! I want to stop doing that! I have a habit of setting unrealistic goals for myself...Like... "I'm going to lose 30 lbs by Christmas!" I said that on the Friday after Thanksgiving.. I need help setting better short-term goals I think. What do you guys think is a reasonable goal for say..a month?

Thanks!

Faith

My nutritionist always tells me that you should lose about 2-3 lbs a week--that is healthy(but I lost 5 last week*smile*)So probably about 10-12 lbs is realistic for a month.

well depending on how fast your body loses the weight ... i'd say that 10 pounds a month is reasonable ... thats about 2 and a half a week ... and you shouldn't lose anymore than that anyways cus they say slower is better :)

Since you've tried before then you know how much your body will lose on average. For instance I know that I can lose at least 2lbs a week if

Hi Faith (I love your name btw)

Welcome to the board if I didnt welcome you in your original post (I am so scatterbrained I forget who I say hi to lol )

I think setting realistic goals is what is really important and not setting ourselves up for failure . Some people post that you can lose 100 pounds in 5 months or something..and while they may have done that , it is not the norm and it is very damaging to people like myself and possibly (?) you thinking we are going to lose 20 or 30 pounds in a month when in reality 10 pounds is more of an ideal goal .

I posted down below in the weigh in that I am going to try on the "setting small goals at a time" thing..someone from this board mentioned that and I apologize I cant say who it was and am too lazy to go look it up . So instead of my saying "I am going to lose 100 pounds this year" it seems like such a big goal it can get overwhelming and i feel like I would give up alot quicker . But saying "I am going to lose 5 pounds by _add date here_" will be more encouraging to me . It may not work for everyone but it is an idea .

I wish you the best of luck and this board is a wonderful source of information on weight loss or just plain silliness I hope to more of you around here!

I think it's actually kind of stressful to say I'll lose X number of pounds by this date. Why not set health-related goals such as "drink 64oz of water a day" "eat 5 servings of vegetables" "exercise 4 days this week" instead of a weight deadline! You'll be focused on getting healthy, not just the number on the scale.

I set my goal to 1 pound under my weight... when I loose that pound I change it again... altho in the future I see myself alot healthier and thinner but as the time is for me I set it as 1 pound goals I think it is easier met and I can focus on today not tomorrow...

again welcome here and hope you can find this a peaceful outlook to turn to as I have..

okay maybe not always peaceful but it sure can make ya laff hehe
